sound card functioing wrongly - need help asap please...

Hey guys. I don't understand how to fix this prblem.

Whatever I use to record my songs the programs have begun to record ALL the sound that goes through my sound card. So I record my first track... then I go to add another, I play my 1st track while recording and this gets added to my second one. It has been fine up until recently, I have no idea why it is doing this, and I don't know how to sort it out.

Please please please help me out, I can't do anything like this!

#1 Basic Newby Question.

Go to recording preference in the Windows audio mixer and uncheck "What You Hear". Have ONLY "Line-In" checked for recording.
 
Windows audio mixer, is normally the loudspeaker icon in the bottom right hand side of your screen in the system tray. It allows you to change the volume of misc things in windows. If you dont have the icon in the system tray you can get to it by going to Control Panel->sounds and audio devices->Device Volume. (NOTE: this is the XP way... and it also varies per Sound card)
 
Sorry I cannot see that button, or checkbox anywhere... I am using XP professional... I have included a screenshot of the screen...

As I said, unfortunatly some sound cards dont have this setting... It may not be your problem then... Or you may find it amongst the "Recording Properties" of the mixer app...

Indeed we could be chasing ghosts anyhows... Some cards dont have the "what you hear" feature, it could be something diffrent entirely...
 
Don't appear to have it, here are all the options I'm given... what else could the problem be?

ok, when you click recording on that options, then hit OK the mixer should change to the recording mixer... (Volumes) Have you made sure that the only one checked is the "Line In"? And you say its all your music software that is doing this? :)
 
yay!!! problem solved! I only selected 'line-in' and now it all works fine! Thanks!
