B,

> Anyone used the Sound Blaster Extigy? <

If it's based on the Audigy it should be clean and quiet enough. But I am not pleased with the way Creative Labs has handled the many Audigy bugs that make it useless as a MIDI sampler. I know you aren't asking about that, and the Extigy is probably fine for audio only. But be safe and make sure you can return it if doesn't work well.

Apa,

That graph is bogus. The Audigy is very flat. I sent Tom's Hardware an email months ago telling them they need to do the test again, and this time without the Chorus effect enabled. :) I never heard back from them, and the wrong info is still up, so obviously Tom's doesn't care that they don't know how to test sound cards!

Thanks for the info Ethan, I thought it looked a little suspicious! :)
He made the same mistake both on the Audigy and the Extigy (the Extigy test is from april 5)!
And that's a good tip for BibleMan and all other sounblaster users, turn off all effects!

Thanks to all of you for all of your comments.

I purchased the Extigy, and recorded a few quick tracks with it at church last night with my laptop. VERY CLEAN!!!

Sinple to use and setup. It seems like Creative has done a nice job. Time will tell, but thus far, it seems like it will be a great portable solution.

Thanks again guys. You rock. :D

Who has the best price on an SB Extigy?

Thanks in advance!

In my opinion, laptops suck for recording. You're not going to get a good sound out of it, 16bit @ 44.1khz if you're lucky, and there's a lot of people who submit demos, so yours has to stand out in quality (both the music, and the sound quality) for you to get anywhere. If you dont have access to a more powerful computer, I think digidesign has a nice two channel card with preamps for only a couple hundred bucks. And use cakewalk or something as software if the protools arent included.

I am confused. If I have a powerful laptop (IBM ThinkPad T20 - PIII, 700Mz, 256 mg RAM), and am using the Extigy for sound, why would I have a hard time getting a "good sound"?

What am I missing?

Thanks.

Laptop cards are smaller, and do not contain the hardware with the ability to capture nice sounding audio, no matter how "flat" it may be. You can MAKE anything flat with a nice eq and real time analyzer. But your hardware must be decent. Usually, with the exception of the digidesign card (M Box), that is specifically designed for pro audio recording on a laptop, they dont make hardware for pro recording for laptops. It is not a question of the power of the laptop, but the ability of the hardware to capture the audio, and the ability to put the correct hardware in the computer, which, I'm sorry to say, you are very limited with a laptop.

I appreciate your comments, but I am using the SoundBlaster Extigy (the external version of their Audigy and connects to the USB port).

Since the Extigy has extraordinary specs, shouldn't I be okay?

I ask again, what am I missing?

Did you presume I was working with the internal sound card (I agree there are no sound cards that I have found that will fit in a laptop that have strong specs - expecially S/N ratio which 100db with the Extigy.

Bruce: Are you out there? Help me out?

Once more, we have ignorance showing.... give it up young'un..........

100db s/n ratio isnt that great
My delta 1010's get 115
When you spend 100 or so instead of 800, ur prolly gonna see a difference. But I guess it''l be fine depending on what you want to do.

Tyler, I didnt know this was a p*&*&^ing contest. We gonna' pull 'em out and measure em'? Geez!!!

I never said i expected my $150 sound card to sound like an $800 one. The beginning post of this thread was just to find out if the card had the specs to do servicable work, and you have done nothing but sh%t on my $2000 laptop, and the newest and best sound card that Creative makes.

Bruce, thanks for the link to Ethan Winner's article. I feel much better. I am convinced that I can do a servicable job with what I have. I have also enjoyed your posts in other threads I have reviewed. And of course, I love the bear (I am not so sure, I would have killed 'em).

To all who have truly tried to help in this thread,l thank you very much. This recording newbie appreciate your efforts.

You're welcome....

BTW - it's not the bear that "needed killin'"!

That's a reference to the standard Texas Murder Defense...... "Shore I shot 'im... because, your honour... he NEEDED killin'!!! ... ... Case Dismissed!!!!"

Kinda like some of the rookies on here!

Now I get it. Thanks for clarifying. I would hate to see that poor bear taken out! :p

I am not lookin' to kill any rookies in here. I am one myself. Just looking for practical, constructive advise. Thankfully, 95% of the time, that's what I get. I hate it when I get so angry that I start flaming. It's not in my nature.

But, as you said, "he needed killin". :D

Have a great night.
