Has anyone used these cards? For $159 they don't seem to be such a bad deal.

Todd........

You'll probably hear from a lot of the experts around here who tend to slam Soundblaster in favor of Delta and other "specifically designed for recording" soundcards. As someone who didn't know any different at the time, I bought a Soundblaster Audigy Platinum (not the EX). After some initial problems that turned out to be my hard drive and motherboard, I got things working fine with my Audigy. I got pretty quick response from the Creative Labs help people when I had questions. To make a long story short, I'm happy with mine but also consider that all I do is record guitar (and in the future midi) straight into n-Track and Cakewalk Guitar Studio so my application is basic, not complex.

good luck,

For $159 you can get a better sounding card that truely delivers 24bit. For just a tad bit more you can get a better sounding card with 4ins 4outs and a real breakout box.

That's not to say that the Audigy doesn't have some nice features. However, I'd grab a basic model OEM for $50 (if you need SPDIF, MIDI, soundfonts, etc).

I find the whole Sound Font support on Sound Blaster cards a mute point now that software like LiveSynth exists. LiveSynth is a DXi plug in that lets you load and use Sound Fonts with any audio card, not just the Sound Blaster.

I just bought my Audiophile 2496 for $150 - it was worth every penny.

The AudioPhile 24/96 was my next choice. I've heard that they are really good. I was planning on just using it in for live type recording and maybe a little multitracking. How many channels does it have?

I have an OEM Audigy, and it's an okay card. I'd think twice about spending $150 on one, though. If you're talking about soundcards in the "well under $100" price bracket, the Audigy is probably the best you can get... the competition gets a lot stiffer over $100 though, and you might be able to do better with something else.

I'm not sure what the Audigy Premium XP offers in terms of connectivity, but the basic Audigy has a minijack out, and one minijack for BOTH line-in and mic-in. These are not things I would pay $150 for. Creative has historically offered the same card in every package, and just changed the bundled software and added a Live/AudigyDrive, so I'm just assuming that the card itself is the same. And although I needed to have an Audigy for my SoundFonts, I thought I'd be able to use it as my only audio solution for a while. Now I've only had it for a few months, and I already want a second card for digital audio. Even my old SB64Gold had gold-plated RCA line-outs and seperate mic and line ins.

2 analog ins (RCA), 2 digital ins (SPDIF) - same for outputs.

It has a MIDI interface as well.
