Not bad --- but a few sonic "issues"....

.......you've got some major funky phase problems happening - not sure if it's the way you tracked it, or just poor use of effects......

Kick drum is too prominent and distorted on top of it......

Vocal isn't placed in the mix properly....

No sense of ambience or space around any of the tracks........

Overall woolly sound to the entire track.... missing "sheen" (and that doesn't come from EQ - it comes from properly-recorded tracks!)


You'll get there, keep learning and keep at it.........!

The tracks are pretty decent. Good performances.

There is some weird phasiness going on. It sounds very over processed. The balance is pretty close but the tracks feel like they have been EQ'd to death or something.

Your definately on the right track. A little more punch and clarity and your probably there.

There is one word for this mp3 smooth! the horns are a lil high for me as well as the keys a lil out of my comfort zone but thats proably cause my stlyes diffrent in just a few parts i would have brought um down a bit. Please give me a run down on what your using cause id love to know thanks

Blue Bear, I am not your equal in engineering but I have some production thoughts.

I would have moved those moving horn lines into the holes between the vocal lines instead of conflicting with your vocals. The only time I put moving horn lines with the vocal lines is when I am about to make a transition to another verse, chorus or bridge section to push a climax point in the production. During the vocal lines I would make those horns stand still on a chord, then let them dance in the holes.

The horns kind of reminded me of Chicago and this was the method they used in a lot of Peter Cetera vocals. This would make your lyrics come forward to the listener and not get lost in the focus the horns take.

Take it or leave it. Just a thought.

We all have our own opinions so take or leave this. I like the song, well arranged well performed, lot's of interesting instrument goodies popping in and out.

On the critical side, your vocal sounds like it is buried behind the music. The voice is good, the groove is good. It just sounds burried and slightly fuzzy, purely production stuff. This may be the phasing thing others are pointing out. Perhaps it's just the MP3 version.

2 suggestions regarding the vocal, I would have added some 7-8Khz boost to clear up the vocal. Next, how about some ambiance on that vocal? A little too dry I think.

The wah guitar is too loud in the right speaker, dominates too much and puts the whole mix right sided heavy.

Before you ask, no you can't hear any of my mixes because nothings done yet. I just got a decent pre and compressor and am redoing most of my vocals on about 10 songs.

Sounds great Blue Bear..I think this is the first mix I've heard of yours and it's not a dissapointment.Everything is placed just right and the vocal is the focal point throughout the song.Very good job spreading things out and fitting things into their proper spectrum......professional even

While I appreciate the feedback -- from my point of view, there is absolutely nothing I would change about that mix.... everything sits where it should, and it all works!

I do admit to a certain fondness for punchy horns... but for that mix to be different, someone else would have had to mix it!

I'm not perfectly sure (listened through my headphones) but IMO the thing that disturbs me most is some synth pad (or maybe the bass?) playing some really weird low tones. In combination with the kick, this leads to ugly sounds...

The voice is too low and missing ambience. But it may be ok if you turn it up. You used some verbs but the track simply is too low... But I like the mix...

Blue Bear: sounds REALLY cool ! But I have the impression that there is some distortion on the vocal: the line 'tired of drinking still my hands stand still' at about 30s-35s seem to start with some kind of distortion. Is it the mp3? Is it my sound card on my pc? Was it the tracks you had to start from? Don't get me wrong: I'd never be able to get something like that done ... I'm just wondering whether my ears drive me crazy or someone with experienced ears will have the same impression. I'm really trying to be learning, and that's why I ask these questions... Oh yeah and the end is cut off on the mp3...
Horns and organ really give a lot of punch - cool!

Yup... the vocal was a little hot in some places...... it was tracked that way (intentionally or not!) -- I think it works in the context of this tune though.....!

I don't get what you mean by "cut off at the end" -- it plays all the way thru for me 3 mins, 17 secs!
