Anyone else have problems installing sonar with direct x 9?
Program tells me i MUST have 8.1.
I try to install 8.1, but it's leaving some 9.0 stuff somewhere.

Anysuggestions?

Yeah, it seems that this is a problem for Cakewalk, and there's very little you can do about it. You could try a DirectX-remover (do a search on www.google.com), but I'm not shure if it'll work.

For some reason you're not able to install Sonar if you've installed DirectX9, and that's just the way it is.

...Well, I've heard some people having trouble with DirX 9. Since it's known bring several trouble, I've never tried myself. Live happy with DirX 8.1 (bundled with SONAR 2 XL CD). Unfortunately, you can't uninstall DirX 9. Once it's installed, you'll need to remove Windows, and reinstall it again... what a silly...:( Don't use it for sure.

Hmmmm. How did I dodge this bullet? I feel like I run into every hurdle possible, but I'm running Sonar with DX9 with no problem at all.

MrStich, did you install the DirectX 9 beta?

Then it might help to install the full version...

Not sure which version I installed.
But I'll try getting another one.

Also... I DID have it running with 9, but I had sonar installed first.
Had some other issues with Sonar, so I went to uninstall it, and re-install it. Then the whole Direct X issues started.

It's not just Sonar that had problems with the DirectX9 Beta. Other users (gamers mostly, I think) have had some problems, because the Beta wasn't fully backwards compatible. But now that DirectX9 is officially released, you should have no problem (I haven't tried it so I speak teorethically of course ;)).

Download it here.

someoen be the guinea pig and let us know how it works out...and if it works better then DX 8

I've tried it (DX9). Haven't encountered any problems...yet.

Did you install DirectX9 before or after installing Sonar?

Out of compability issue...

Does anybody have an info about it's final release feature ? I mean does it give any benefit for musician beside gamers / multimedia minded ?

I've run into this exact same problem yesterday, and actually popped online to post about it. What a coincidence. Anyways, what happened to me was that I was running Sonar XL2.0 just perfectly last week with DX8.1. Then I had a catastrophic system file error and had to transfer all vital files over to the other physical hard drive and reinstall Win2000 and all the applications. I then read an interesting thread about these "KX-something" drivers for SB cards that will, among other things, get quite reasonable latency numbers (something all us SB users have struggled with in the past). So I went to install them, and it required that you had the most recent DirectX. So I downloaded 9.0, installed, then chickened out on the KX drivers when I read some of the info, and something about only mono soundfont support and causing periodic sudden restarting of Windows (something I had seen before on my system shortly before the big bang). Man I'm long winded. Anyhoo, I go to install Sonar, and it says it needs 8.1. So I go to uninstall 9.0, and I can't figure it out for the life of me how to, apart from deleting the individual .dll files (scary me thinks...). So I try to install 8.1 from Sonar, and of course, since 9.0 is already on there it runs for 2.3 seconds and says its all done (and really its done nothing at all but notice I already had a newer version installed then automatically quit).

I figure the Sonar people HAVE to notice this and provide us with a patch or something, and soon!

...You right. Let's tell 'em. Send them an E-mail.

I just can't understand why Cakewalk didn't implement this in the Sonar 2.2 update... They must have been informed about the DirectX9 update...

At the bottom of this page there's a sollution for the DirectX9 problem.

Good! :)

Any advantages to move over to DirectX 9 ?

A good solution (at least for me) was to fool my windows XP to think it runs DirectX 8.1, allthough it runs DX9.0. Here is how to:
------------------------------------------------------
open regedit by selecting START RUN and enter REGEDIT and press ENTER
in the directory structure on your left browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/DIRECTX

Change the value to 4.08.01.0810

then browse to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/NVIDIA Corporation/Global/NVTweak/State/DXVersion

and change MSVersionFlag to 4.08.01.0810

This will work for ALL NVIDIA USERS!!!
------------------------------------------------------
I couldn't find the second value so I just changed the first one. It now works flawlessly and I was able to install Sonar 2.0 XL and the upgrades regardless of having DX 9.0 installed first.
Credits goes to MadCow for the solution.
