soo i need alot of help!!

ok so i hardly know anything at all about recording and would like help from someone with a little more know how then i have

so what im thinking about doing cause me and my band members dont have alot of is

getting a mixer
for 2 reasons
1- i know i can use a mixer as my pa for our vocals just take the output into an amp and then to the speakers easy
2- i figure i can record with it(not looking for amazing quality, just some roughs.. ill go to a real!! studio when i want good stuff)

then i figure i just get some drums mics and i have a few other mics sitting around

and pretty much plug it into the sound card on my buddys laptop

i know i cant get everything into seperate tracks on the comp right?
since it would just be like left and right going into the comp
or is there something i can use for really cheap to get sep. tracks from a mixer:S
if not then just somewhat eq it on the mixer and record

or is there any other better way of doing it with a mixer to the pc
key thing is here we dont have much money

any help i can get would be great

its not gonna be on sepreate tracks so if you do it that way theres no sense doing it digitaly but you could get a usb mixer that you could also use as a pa

You can record everything from the mixer into two tracks into the lap top. The problem is, you don't have the option of mixing after the fact. If you want to be able to play around with the mix after recording, you're going to have to get a multi channel interface of some type. I haven't kept up with the latest, and greatest, but if you do some research on the subject, you'll find what you need. And usually, it ain't cheap.

Something like this might be your answer. All channels run to the computer separately and before the channel strips!!! That's a big plus. You can use it for live gigs, it's got built-in effects. It's firewire so it will handle all channels running simultaneously. You might find your laptop will be the stumbling block. Especially if it has only one physical hard drive.
