Well so I jumped the gun a little. Not everything is peachy anymore. Im not ripping hairs out, that would hurt.

With the Delta fully functional, and having tested it in n-track, I decided that working in my n-track would be much better if the graphics weren't so crappy.

I installed the PCI vid card...Rage Pro 3-d, not great hardware but a lot better than the onboard. That actually turns out alright.

Turn the computer off.

Decide to try the SB16 as well, for various reasons.

I put the card physically in.

Turn the computer on,.,.,.,.,.,.,and,.,.,.,.,.,.,nothing.

not even the compaq startup screen.

ctrl - alt del doesnt work,

neither does F5 or Fanything for that matter,

I begin working backwards removing the cards one by one as they were installed.

All of the cards are out now, even the USB cables are unplugged.

Nothingness, Ive even sat here for an hour waiting for it to unfreeze itself.

I put in a cd, win98se to be exact, it spins, the light comes on but thats all.

I put in the 98se boot floppy as well, the floppy drive doesnt even light up, let alone 'spin'.

The Power light is on as well as the HD light, meaning its frozen or whathaveyou. At this point I cant think of anything else to do really. Any ideas?...This is crazy

While Im here, whats some good kinda puters that go with Delta cards?...I may be in the market for one.

Ok I spent about three hours online chatting with a 'support specialist' at compaq. I must say it was fairly helpful with basic diagnosis of stuff, and was actually pretty cool all in all. It didn't get to the root of my problem, but I managed finally to get the damn thing to more than turn the lights on.

Oddly enough I switched monitors.

And even then at first it only booted me to the 'Compaq screen' stage.

Then the monitor actually went dead (like as if to say I had shut down my computer, but not turned the power off the monitor).

The second boot it froze somewhere...

The third time I got to the windows bootup.

4th frozen...

5th time I can actually get it booted right up, and fixin stuff.

This is kooky man...

You could turn this into a book, badass. :D

However, what you're going through is how most of us learned about computers in the first place (at least, that's how I learned).

You persistence may or may not give you a working Compaq with both a Delta and SB16, but you will know a whole lot more about computers when you're through.

All kidding aside, I have heard of more issues like yours with Compaq's than any other make of PC. (Although Packard-Bell is way up there)

When the boys from Texas Instruments left to form Compaq, they built a terrific machine. Top notch. Well, that was quite a few years ago.

But like so many companies, once they establish a name and reputation... they start to play games. Cheapen the components, or make it difficult to incorporate other components into the unit.

The most recent story is about a girl I know with a Compaq notebook. I won't bore you with the details, but simple solutions to keeping that notebook working just DOESN'T WORK. Right down to the operating system... that's specially encoded for Compaq. Don't misplace your Windows OS disk!

Good luck with your fiasco. I wish I had some answers for you.

Ive never had to muck with something quite like this before, I wish I got paid for it hehe.

I almost had things up and running at about 10 am, when it reverted back to its favorite comopaq screen, at which point, exhausted, i went and passed out.

There seems to be a really weird thing with the video, specifically the onboard (big surprise). And Im not sure how a person is supposed to go about this. For example, I have the onboard as well as a video card installed. The monitor is plugged into the vid card. So if I wanted to revert to the onboard, should I simply unplug the monitor from the caard, then plug it into the onboard, as well as remove the card...and then reboot?...Im guessing this is what Im supposed to do. Or rather the order in which to do things.

As well to note, everytime I take the Delta out I have to go through the whole process of wiping everything clean again or it goes nutty, no if ands or buts.

Im actually afraid to disable the onboard video again. I did that when things were looking like it was working. That worked ok actually, but when I put in the soundblaster card I lost absolutely everything. I hate how a soundcard issue causes a complete loss of display. It took a swapping of monitors to get it going again, and thats something else completely fucked.

As well, after I did get some display back, it wasnt liking my keyboard after awhile...system error keyboard error bla bla bla...

If it tells me ever that it doesnt like my mouse its gonna become compaq roadkill...

Anyhow, back to the drawing board...thanks

You Betcha. If your using the onboard video you need to take the other vid card out.
If you want to use the pci vid card, then the onboard video has to be disabled.
If Compaq didnt give you a way to disable the onboard video (which doesnt seem right) and the onboard video goes bad, then you have a useless Motherboard.

I dont know if im going to be able to use the sb16...actually im not going to even try, i am too annoyed to test my patience further at this point.

I would prefer actually to be able to use the onboard sound for general internet purposes, i.e. gaming and chatting. Right now everything is running through the Delta, i.e. when I play a song in realplayer. The mic input on the onboard is active as well as the speaker outs, but the only sound I can get out of the speakers so far is my voice thru the mic in or line in. How do I change the settings so that I can get stuff to come out of the ESS, and is this even a good thing to be doing.

Im sorry if some of this is repetitious and general, but Im just trying to get basic functions here. I would really prefer to utilize the Delta purely for recording purposes only, although Im not opposed to general use if its possible and wont fry it. Im also guessing there isnt a lot of people out there who run an ESS and Delta simultaneously :D.

Thanks for all the advice and help in here so far, I think Ive learned a lot so far (I better have).

One last thing, now it always asks me to enter that goddamn password upon starting windows again...maybe I should sue compaq for stress induced psychosis ?:D

No. The onboard Video must be disabled first. Then turn off the computer and Install the PCI card in the slot. Connect the monitor to the PCI card. Turn the computer back on. If you didnt do this before it may be your problem.

Are you trying to use A delta, a Sb card and the Onboard sound at the same time?
Either one,soundblaster or onboard audio,will work for internet and gaming. Not necessary to have both. IRQ conflicts.

Think I got it this time around :rolleyes: . Slot 1 - vid card, slot 2 - Delta card, slot 3 - ethernet card, slot 4 - sb16 card. The exact process I wont bore you with ;), and honestly it was probably a bit flukey anyway. I even went to disable the USB's, but even those have one of those nice autodetect/install features. It's somewhat odd I have two little icons for the sb16 on my taskbar. both icons are different, and they both open different appearancewise mixers, but both are the same thing. But it's not broken so I'm not going to fix it. I found how to designate where the sound comes out as well hehe, the ESS mixer had no option for changing output, the sb does making it easy for me.

I think it took a fair amount of reading, understanding and patience to get it, but its done finally. Thanks for all the help here.
 
lol thanks duck, I guessed right then with regard to the video. Oh yeah baby IRQ conflicts indeed :D
