Soniformer vs MB

Voxengo's Soniformer seems to work well if you need a little correction in a problematic area. Took awhile to wrap my head around how it works, but now I'm beginning to see the light.
With the new UAD-1 multiband coming out in a few days I'm wondering what kind of advantage there might be between a 249.00 MB and the 60.00 Soniformer? Although the UAD has a prettier GUI it's hard to imagine that it will be anymore useful or transparent than the Soniformer. In fact, Soniformer looks more useful with the 3rd octave bands. Any thoughts about this?

Soniformer is not intended to be used the same way a 3 or 4 Band MB Compressor would be used.

Soniformer is best used for spectrum balance of a (sub)mix.

Soniformer is excellent for *avoiding* the usual "maul-the-band" artifacts that come with MBC. You can "smooth" out the offending frequencies... You can "curve" a gentle correction to an entire mix. You can "kiss" sibilance with more control than most de-essers.

It's very easy to make the soniformer act as a "maul the band" compressor. Getting a MBC to act as a Soniformer is another story...

Sonixx and John, thanks for your answers. I already decided to buy the Soniformer and your responses validated the decision.
A question for John - I know you're a UAD-1 man. As for Voxengo, are there any other of Alesky's plugins you would choose over the UAD-1 in a given situation?

Perhaps in a given situation... Hard to tell when. I have in the past, I probably will in the future.

Hi John,

I'm curious about this, too. Which ones do you like?

Totally dependent on what a mix is asking for - *Normally* (at least for me) they're asking for hardware. If they're asking for plugs, it just depends on which plugs they're asking for vs. what I have available.

Excellent answer without answering the question...you should run for political office! Do you feel comfortable with spilling the beans about which specific Voxengo plugins you have used?

I have a few here and there - Can't even remember which ones in particular. But it's the same with anything else here - I don't decide what's going to be used until I'm listening to the track. Other than the monitoring chain, everything else - Converters, EQ's, compressors, limiters, digital processing - None of that is firmly established until I'm listening to the mixes.

I use Soniformer much more often than traditional maul-the-band compression. I'm sure I'll get UAD's new one when it comes out, but I'll probably use it much less than the Soniformer.

I suppose that's the only one that I reach for on a quasi-regular basis no that you mention it...
