Has anyone heard of this being done?

The application is for hearing protection for workers where several stations in a production area are using loud engraving equipment. The rest of the people are engaged in quiet tasks.

Otherwise everyone would have to wear airport worker style ear protection and nobody would hear the phone ring!

But the work can be done inside a glovebox that has some HD acoustic insulation; e.g. double or triple pane glass for the window.

I'm wondering what sort of dB reduction could be engineered into an acoustically treated box.

Maybe this is informative on its own.

Nobody has seen this tried.

Time to put on my Edison Hat!

The box must be big enough to fit the parts being engraved- they are generally no bigger than 2' x 2'.

I know there exist iso booths (a large 'U' upside down open at both side, padded with dampening material) in which a worker can easily make a phone call in a noisy hall, but that's the other way around from what you need.

Maybe in the acoustics forum, John Sayers' forum or yahoogroups [acoustics] ?
