I'm looking for a list of songs with the happiest, poppiest, catchiest melodies so I can analyze them. If you could make any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

I will start off the list.

The Beatles
Dave Clark Five - Because
Of Montreal - Penelope
"The Wonders" - That thing you do
"The Archies" - Sugar, sugar
Wheatus - Teenage Dirt Bag
Green Day
Weezer

Herman's Hermits: Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter
Freddie & The Dreamers: I'm Telling You Now
Manfred Mann: Do Wah Diddy Diddy

Have you seen allmusic.com and their search feature that let's you explore by "mood", such as happy, etc?

Just from the top of my head, here is my catchiest list regardless of genre.
Will add more as I can think more on it, as Im writing a tune right now ^^
Might not be all happy, but catchy - hell yeah:

Kyrie Eleison (Mr. Mister)
Unwell (Matchbox twenty)
Poor Leno (Royksopp)
Crazy (Seal)
Angels (Heffernan, Guy Chambers, Robbie Williams)
Shooting Star (Bad Company)
Complicated (Avril Lavigne)
Dancing Queen (ABBA)
Davy´s on the road again (Manfred Manns Earth Band)
Dont wanna miss a thing (performed by Aerosmith)
Drowning (Max Martin/Backstreet boys)
Sing (Travis)
Unnamed (the song im writing now) ^^

There are tons more. Will add more later.

Beatles - When I'm 64/Good day Sunshine
Mongo Jerry - In the Summertime

Here are a few off the top of my head:

Herman's Hermits -- I'm Into Something Good
Queen -- You're My Best Friend
Beatles --
I Want to Hold Your Hand
I Saw Here Standing There
Please Please Me
I Will

P.S. That Thing You Do is an excellent choice, grn. Love that song!

I'll try to add a few ...I'm a little iffy on the exact title of some of these:

The Beatles: "Hello Goodbye"..."Penny Lane"...and "I'd Be Happy just to Dance with You"
REM: "Stand"
The Archies: "Band-Shang-A-Lang"
Daddy Dewdrop: "Chic-A-Boom"
Pilot: "Magic"...the one that goes: "oh, oh, oh, it's magic, you know, never believe it's not so"

holy crap. You win. Guaranteed to have that damn song in my head all day....and don't it feel good!

Oh and my contribution, sticking with my recent john Denver obsession - Annies Song. very cool chord progression. Lots of his other songs are over the top happy too. Thank god I'm a country boy, grandma's featherbed, to name a few popular ones.

Good topic. I've been giving this a little thought as well, since it's good to analyze songs that work -- and here are some that I came up with, and while these are not necessarily my personal favorite songs (in fact I'm kinda sick of them since they're totally played out), but they are undeniable in their power of pop-catchiness...

  • B-52's - Love Shack
  • R.E.M. - Shiny Happy People (since someone else already mentioned "Stand")
  • Kelly Clarkson - Since You Been Gone

Here are a few more that are darn catchy (but not necesarily poppy):

  • U2 - Vertigo
  • Dandy Warhols - We Used To Be Friends
  • The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
  • Weezer - Buddy Holly
  • Green Day - When I Come Around
  • The Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated

...I'll edit this and add more if any others come to mind. ;)
