Song "Where will I go" - workedsolongonitnowImprobablyblindanditstartstodrivemeNUTS !

Hi,

just a few short words : I finally decided to turn a shitload of unfinished songs into somethign listenable.
This is my first serious attempt with all the stuff "one should do" in mind.

However, as I programmed / recorded / mixed everything, I believe to have reached a point where I cannot distinguish anymore if this is any good.

So I would really like to hear some opinions on this:

(on a side note : somewhat embarassing to state in the profile that I work with computers and then having a hard time to figure out how to upload an mp3 here and put it in the message....tsk,tsk)

Hamburg, fun little town. Visited there and found it to be a quirky little harbor town.

I don't have as good an ear as many on this board, they can find a flea on a dog from 100 feet. But what I heard, mix was good, volume faded in and out a bit. Some pitch issues on the vocals (they didn't sound bad, just FYI), but over all nice little tune.

I wish you a good slide! :laughings:

Mixing-wise, you have it covered, it sounds good. There is the odd little occasion where the main vocal goes a bit quiet or gets lost behind something else. If you're looking for a confirmation on whether the music or the song is good, then I haven't got a strong opinion. I like my music to be fairly dramatic in some way, whereas this is pretty innocuous. :)

Thank you so far :)

I've struggled with the vocals indeed, both in terms of pitch (but then decided to keep it that way, at least for the moment) and volume. I did the vox recording in several days and had a hard time with the correct mic position/ singing volume. Used the Hornet Autogain already, but I think I'll tweak some more manually.

I listen to more or less everything from The Blade Runner soundtrack to Meshuggah, but when it comes to making music, it seems like I start to turn into a little easy listening pussycat :D

Man at times your voice sounds just like the guy from "Cake". and thats a good thing. You have a nice voice. As far as the song....its good. Tones seem to be good to me..some neat parts. I think it does lack some energy from the verse to the chorus. Good job bro.

Cake? Can't remember that band, but will have a listen :)
Btw I find it very interesting that somebody else who heard the song said that the voice is nice AND said that it lacks energy from verse to chorus.
(i played around with a few things but was simply unable to increase it without turning it into fierce metal)

I can hear why others commented about the chorus - when you you go to the doubled sound in the chorus, the volume drops compared to the verse. In the final verse the overtracked vocal that pans from one side to the other is much louder and in front, when this overtracked vocal comes in again non-panned it fits better.

Very interesting. Would you personally increase the vocals in the chorus or pull them down in the verse?

There are a few things for you to consider about volume. Where do I want the sound, upfront, in the middle or in the back.

If I do something where I want it back, like a thought like (she whispered my name) and want that to sit back in the mix it would be just loud enough to hear, but it would be an effect to show it was a subtle notion. But if I wanted it to be a focus (the dude yelled out my name) and I pushed it in your face.

Ask yourself this, when the song is going along, should the vocals be consistent through out, are there times where it should go in the back, up front or somewhere in the middle. Then if it sounds more like a volume inconstancy, then you need to figure out how to make it sound as you have in your head.

Whether the volume is up or down, from the sound of it in the sample, sounds like it needed to all be of equal volume (perception, relative to the song). Whether it should be louder or quieter is the call for the person creating it.

Try it both ways and see how you like it. Experimenting is how you learn.

Thanks for all the feedback, I fiddled a tiny bit more with the verse volumes and think it is good enough to let it have mastered now.
