Song No. 6

The song is great...always love the vocals on your tunes.

Mixwise...man, understand my ears are not awesome when I HAVEN'T been mixing all day, but there's something weird going on in the low mids? Like...not enough ass in the bass or something? The kick sounds fantastic, but it sounds to me like it's carrying 100% of the low end.

Summary for Greg: More bass? Or more low mids in the bass?

Haha...I was wondering what Rami did to piss you off since I hit the link and got the huge 404 Error. :D

As it plays:
Love the rhythm gits.
Really present drums.
The vox are quiet but I actually like where they are.
The acoustics sound cool.
Personally I'd love a little more bass guitar - I think it's fighting for space in the toppy end.
the build to the solo from the bvox is cool. The phases of the solo work nicely too.
Is that a mandolin after the solo?
This is a textural journey - touchie feelie candy for the ears.
Please keep the stick click at the end.
Supercreep & Incanaus - this keeps my faith in LPC intact, but in a vaery Pavlovian response I'll be salivating for the meal that this presages.
Translation Please : = COOL stuff.

*bump*

Not for Supercreep...I f**&ing hate him. For a low mid check. :D

Thanx man, you remembered I can't get anything on NowhereRadio for some reason.

As usual, great playing, singing, and writing. I can see what Chris is talking about. It almost sounds the way my system sounds when I hook my speakers up out of phase by mistake...or something.

Could it be that you just need to flip the polarity of your kik drum to be in phase with your overheads??? It's right up there with any LPC tune, but the actual sound has something funky going on with it.

great song. the wife likes it too.

add me to the "more bass guitar" list. it's pretty thin.

vox are typically phenomenal, and i like the "indie meat" sound of the electric guitar--has an "analog" quality, for lack of a better term.

on the "daddy won't stop" part i want extra guitar layers added with a small fader bump to make that part giant.

acoustic git sound marvelous--i love that smooth, glassy tone.

drums might be a touch loud and the kick a little boxy, but now i'm just being picky.

i'm pretty surprised to find so many nits--everything i've heard from you is maddeningly great. i wonder if you spent 2 months on it because the sonics were below your normal standards from the start? i'm not being snarky, i'm just musing out loud...believe me, this is still miles beyond anything i'm capable of.

edit: by "more bass" i mean more low mids as chris is saying. the attack on it seems sufficient.

Artistic.

2:45 is a magic moment sonically. Fuk anybody who thinks I'm being corny. Really beautiful.

Overall, the mix needs more at 350Hz and below. As has been mentioned. But the fact that it sounds good as is shows really good recording skill. So many mixes use the low-mid range to mask edginess in the upper mids. None of those problems here.

Interesting...a little more straight-forward than some of your tunes, which is nice in a way. A very articulate mix. Wonderful guitars, cymbals and vocal work. Maybe a little thinner sounding overall than I'd expect, but I am on pc speakers and am in no position to offer advice. Always look forward to your next offering and this does not disappoint.

This song took over two months to record. I have no idea why it was hard, but it was.
I know why - cause there's so much cool stuff that had to be recorded. A veritable feast for the ears guys. Excellent....:D:cool::D:cool:

Yep.

Yep. I can hear it now. Forests and trees.

Please keep the stick click at the end.

Thanks, Ray. I couldn't lose the stick click if I wanted to. I did want to, you know. :)

Either that or double it. Maybe both. :) My issue with the tune is perhaps a rhythmic thing going on between the chorus vocal and the drums.

great song. the wife likes it too.

Pass along my appreciation, if you have an opportunity.

Yes.

We write some turds, too. This isn't a turd, but I don't think it's our best work either. I think it has a lot of interesting detail, but lacks some rhythmic complexity and has perhaps some minor timing issues with the drums. I'm fond of the acoustic guitars and mandolins Incanus put down.

i mean more low mids as chris is saying. the attack on it seems sufficient.

Aye, cap'n. More low mids. Incanus might not agree, but it may be the Clickenbacker isn't the right bass and we need something with actives and more than four strings.

2:45 is a magic moment sonically. Fuk anybody who thinks I'm being corny. Really beautiful.

It is my sincere pleasure to work with Incanus. He picked up the mandolin pretty quickly.

Interesting...a little more straight-forward than some of your tunes

Yeah, it's not like a new direction for us, but we're trying to mix it up a little. Is it too rawk?

there's so much stuff that had to be recorded.

It's a disease, or an addiction. :) I wish I could say it with two guitars, bass and drums.

Wow, great song, man!
That's some fine songwriting, has a nice independent feel to it. Recording's great, maybe the voices could come up a little. Beautiful voice. Nice work!

Joe :):)

Arrangement and performance are stellar. Great tune. You've got all the comments on the mix already. I might add I think the vox is notched a little tight. I'd like to hear them fuller. Whatever that means, maybe more around 500hz.

Lots of dynamics in this song, very cool.

Cheers,

I can't add anything to what's already been said regarding the mix, but I just had to chime in on this one.

Killer song. In spite of the "indie" feel some have described--it (like all your stuff) has a very fleshed out and mature feel. By that I don't mean old, I mean like it's all grown up--a real song. Just great stuff.

And I completely agree with Mr. XLR on the sonic bliss that occurs at 2:45. That's a very sweet turn of events.

Thanks everyone!

Like Supercreep, I think I sort of lost perspective on this one. I like all the different places this song goes to keep it moving ahead, but I'm just not sure about the song itself anymore. Or the mix. There's more work to be done.

I don't think we ever really did much eq on it yet. If we can't sort out the bass sound, it wouldn't necessarily kill me to re-track it: it wasn't fiendishly difficult.

Points of interest: this is our first time recording 12-string acoustic OR mandolin. Strangely, those instruments are the least of our problems here!

Looks like I'm hearing the same thing....give that bass some room of it's own...it's just getting smoked in the mix.
Overall, a little muddy around 300 hz. Very narrow stage, I'd look at maybe panning the guits a bit more as well as the backing vocals. As an experiment, I took a snippet and opened the stereo field a smidge...night and day. The tune got much larger and the guitars really came to life.

Seems overly compressed in places....really lost some life @ 3:10 after the quiet section as the compressor just brutally suppressed the mix.

Very, very cool tune. Almost has an agressive Sundays vibe to it.

It's a keeper for sure. But it needs alot of work from 500 hz down.

Nice start, lads.

Nice energy. The snare is begging for a little crack but it's not a deal breaker.

When one can write and record a song like you obviously can, little audio tweaks aren't going to be the determining factor in the enjoyment factor. :)

After reading Incanus' comments I downloaded & listened again.
As a song it works!
It isn't as lyrically complex or as detailed a narrative as some you've done but it's laden with catch phrases that become hooks.
retracking the bass - is it not remixable? I mean, go right ahead but...
It's a cool song.

Great song!!! Agree with superbeatballer about the snare...it needs a little more high end crack to really accent things during the verse....Those vocals are fantastic!!!
Congrats on another killer song!!
