I wish you'd never learn.

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/rockpop/voxvendor/singles

I have had a few requests to hear this song through email, so here it is...

I sent it to the magazine over a year ago, and as you might hear with my other songs, my sound and maybe even my songwriting has quite changed in the past year.... Making this tune a bit "obsolete" (if thats the word to use)

This song probably won't make it onto my cd, but it was a learning experience...

Im still blown away at the review it got...

Let me know what you think...

Joe

Listened to it before you even got it posted here ;)

I like, but really bloody short!

Good to hear something new from ya! (New as in newly posted I should say)

Waldo... You heard the wrong one.. I replaced it about 10 minutes later with the full length version...

Your too damn fast for me :D

Thanks

Hehe, I'll listen again. Just noticed a new Vox song and had to tune in ;)

W.

Schveet ;) A little thin in the odd spot, but overall a radio-esque tune!

W.

Cool song Vox!I dig pretty much all of your stuff so this isnt obsolete to me.It's new!I've been wondering when the hell you were gonna post something new.:D

I get the "Recording" mag too.I remember when it first came out in the 80's it was like a drug that came in the mail every month.I couldnt get enough of it but it seems that they have left me behind in this world of technology:)Im still trying to figure out a Digital workstation much less all the computer stuff they cover these days. The magazine seemed to change directions too when Nick Batzdorf left.

Anyhow,nice tune dude!:D

Thanks guys...

Yeah, I have a few songs on the go... but being in the lazy relaxed summer mode, I haven't gotten much done....

Spent all day today recording though... for a change..

It's been a nice day.

I loved the way you switched between the lo-fi and hi fi sections. What a shift! I kinda liked those garage sounding drums in the top. When the hi fi section kicks in, those guitars sounded incredibly good--up front but not fizzy or direct sounding. I dug the a cappela ending too.

My only critique is that I'd like the vocals, especially on the verses, bumped up a bit more. Of course, I almost always want more vocals!

Anyway, its an excellent job here. Did you track all those drums? They sounded PERFECT!

Yup all the drums are live.. except the bass drum..

All done with sm57's Including cymbals..

I wasn't happy with the sound of the b-drum so I replaced it with a sample...

Oh, and all the guitars were actually direct..... Gotta Love them pods...

All of those guitars are pod.

Thanks alot!
Joe

I heavily dig the non lo-fi parts.. and the vocal sound (on the non lo-fi parts) is phenominal.. The drums sound great.. (on the non lo-fi parts) :D I expected a lot and it sounded really good man..

Great vocal melody and it sounds professional imop.. (on the non lo-fi parts.) :D

See the thumb!

I just pulled out my July issue of Recording mag and there it is!You actually took a chance sending this tune in with the low-fi beginning. The reviewer was gettin kinda worried thinking that the whole song was gonna sound like that!:D
The guy they reviewed right before you got slayed!:D!

That is just plain flat out fuckin awesome.......

finally getting a chance to hear it, im not surprised at all the review you got......yo da man....

Mike

Thanks Gidge...

Im starting to get this feeling that I should put it on the album... Maybe song # 1...:D..

I mean, according to listener critiques, it's goin' about 100% strong...

Just something about it... namely the chorus, and I don't mean sound... Im talking songwriting, just sounds wimpy to me...

Are you guys hearing this...? Or am I just too critical of myself...

Be honest..

Joe

Oh, and Kramer... Yeah.. Marty is very strict with his critiques.... Sort of like Mixmkr... If it sucks, he's not shy on saying it.... He's a a great critiquer.. By the sound of the review, they were gonna let the lo fi go for another 5 seconds before they gave up.. I guess the better sounding part jumps in just in the nick of time:D

freakin awesome!!!

Just found my new god; jesus is now riding shotgun. Bowing, I'm bowing... Bowing now. Does that please you Lord VOXVENDOR? ;);)

Damn, that's just flat out perfect. Thought I heard it clip in the louder parts--probably just my ears clipping the sound out of jealousy :D:p

That just sounds impossible for a home recording... lemme guess... a three-track recorder and three Mr. Microphones? ;) The mix is even more impossible. Did you master this track, or have it mastered? Cuz that's not even fair if you got those levels just mixing!!

Wait a sec... just saw the gear list in "Recording"... yup a Pod... and Waves Gold. Incredible :)

Well, you certainly know how to wring beauty out of a Pod! Not to mention Sm57's. I am most impressed. Sublime engineering and tracking. The quality is pro caliber. Its got the gloss and shine. If you see somebody peeking through your window at your next session, it will be me, trying to steal your secrets!

but the other half of that equation is being able to offer WHY it sucks... which is the hard part...eh?

anywazz...enuff with philosophy..

good to hear some new[old] stuff from ya Joe.

The lofi/hifi transformation definately works...but I'm not sure I'd have done it three times... the second verse was ok...the third time around...maybe..maybe not. Hard to call.

I'd take a Vox(vendor) up mix. I like the Death Gizzard sound too...actually quite a bit...but I think Def's vocals are up louder than your mixes...and yours could stand to come up more too.

Performance wise, the weak part of the playing is your gtr solo. Everything else is really rock solid, and you get a great sound....even the crappy garage gtr sound. The lead could showcase a little more "flash" and tastyness in my book. Plus the sound is kinda not there for the lead too.

Nice songwriting, melodies, production...etc... In just the small amount of stuff I've heard of yours, I can tell your chord changes, melodies. .. and that's a MAJOR plus.

the acapella ending is definately cool....and a nice reverb use too...panned and all. However, I might have let the reverb 'tail out' on your last phrase, rather than just cutting it off like a gate...and/or maybe even extended the whole ordeal a bit too...like repeat it, and fade...maybe??

put it on the CD. It's on par with your other stuff, and fits right in.

oh...could somebody put a copy of the 7/02 Recording article up, per chance? I don't get that mag, and would love to read the review.
