Song creation in Fruity Loops - referencing patterns?

Hi all -

I've been able to create some nice sounding patterns in Fruity Loops.

Where it gets tedious is in creating variations within your song sequencer...

How can I reference/view pattern "1" as a starting point for creating pattern "2" besides toggling back and forth?

It's tough when you've got things in all kinds of piano rolls, etc. and want to create a slight variation for other patterns in your song...

- go to the pattern that you want to copy, hit 'select all' (I believe it's in the edit menu)
- then 'copy' the selection (again, in the edit menu)
- go to the next unused pattern and 'paste'
