I posted this song a couple weeks ago to get feedback on the drums, and go some good responses. Now I present to you the "final (voxless)" version.

I'm trying to go with a professional sound here, so I want you to be as critical as possible. Whether or not you like the song is fine, I just want to know people's gut feelings on how "home recorded" it sounds.

Guitar tone ok?
Drums ok?
Levels ok?
Any obvious defects I somehow missed?
Does it sound retarded?

I've heard it so many times now, it's hard for me to tell.

Intro is very TOOL.
Have you EQ'd all the middle out?
The 1st couple of faster sections could use some bass definition.
A bit more bottom end maybe.
The extra percussion sounds to be panned at bit too far out.
The quiet section around 3.15 needs something - more volume maybe as it doesn't fill the space so doesn't quite build up the tension - is there a solo coming for that section?
Good stuff.

Guitar tone ok? - yes
Drums ok? - yes
Levels ok? - yes
Any obvious defects I somehow missed? - no
Does it sound retarded? - no

Ray'c comments are good. The only thing that caught my attention was that the guitar in the intro and 3:20 sounded a bit "different" than the metal stuff. I'm not familiar with what is used for this genre but I wondered whether some more distortion would work...just wondering. It's a good piece and I think it is pretty close to being done....(except vox of course)

The mix sounds good...all tracks sound pretty good individually however I would probably pan things a bit different...perhaps the lead track would sound better more centered...I think its to far to the right.

Rayc: Intro is very TOOL. - Yeah, I know. Someone pointed out to me a song that had an intro that was very similar. Funny, because I'm not much of a Tool fan myself.

I just got a bass about a month ago, so I'm still getting used to playing it and figuring out what sort of sound I'm trying to get from it. I think I'll do some more tweaking to it.

I was hoping that with vox, the "lead" guitar would be able to take a side stage, so I think it might sound a little awkward without the vox in there. I hope that issue will be fixed when (if) I put vox to this track.

Thanks for the comments. Very helpful.

As for a guitar solo, I tried to put one in last night. I was a little rushed on time, so I'm not sure I'm happy with what I came up with. Please be brutally honest with this before I go off and show it to my friends and look like a dork.

Does it sound like I'm just trying to play as fast as I can with no regards to the music playing behind the lead, or does it actually work. I feel like it almost falls apart on a couple parts. I know the sound is a little scratchy, I'll fix that later. Again, please be brutally honest. Does this solo work?

Sounds excellent, everything has impact, heavy and (thanks:D) without the annoying overcompressed thing, so common (almost as a "default" to the style).

Cimbal (R channel, starting 01:31) lacks a bit of punch and volume (compared to hihat).
Waiting the vox version.

yeah, I remember thinking that when I first recorded the drum tracks, then I got used to it. I'll have to look into it to see if there is much I can do to fix it.

It's good I think. Seems like most of the comments would wring out the last 2 or 3 percent. One little thing I noticed was that the rim shots on the snare aren't consistent, which is not necessarily bad because it says: "real drums". But, the snare does disappear in a few spots, you will hear them when you think about it. You could paste a good rim crack in those spots.
And, I think you will be looking for a little more drums once you add the vox.
The retard question will be important once you put the vocals on.
Excellent.

yeah, I noticed that, and I always fight the urge to quantize. I probably left it in so that people would actually think the drums were real, even though I know that in a real recording, you would have more consistent snare hits. I know that at some point, I will go back and fix that.

As for being retarded, your right. I think this song has huge potential for being retarded, depending on the vox track. Hopefully I can avoid that when the time comes.

ok, last time, I promise. I recorded a new guitar solo last night, after realizing the first one I did was completely lame. I also did some level adjustments and stuff, although pretty subtle. Let me know if this guitar solo works.
