Sonar3 Slow down

I am feeling kinda stupid at the moment and I'm hoping I have set some config bit the wrong way and someone here can help - I am running Sonar3 on an XP system and while the audio is running, if I open any pulldown menu; right click on audio or effects bin or menus, the audio output slows to something like half speed... This has been working forever here... am I nuts?

OK, this has something to do with the system playing a sound when a menu opens. I went into control-panel, sounds and disabled the sound events for menus and that fixed the problem...

Maybe a conflict between drivers. I'll post more when I figure it out.

The sound card that I use specifically says not to use it to play default windows sounds as you describe.

I keep the onboard audio on my mobo enabled for games etc., and just use a cable to loop out of the mobo and into my 'real' sound card.
