They've effectively abandoned X2 though, and I aint in a hurry to upgrade to X3.

Got a $99 customer-loyalty upgrade offer for X3PE.
Any idea if it will run on XPPRO?
X2PE runs fine with no crashes so far on XP.

Turns out that $99 bucks later X3 CANNOT be installed on XP OS.

Free? The ad I saw said $29. Is it worth it to upgrade fromX1 to X3? What are the improvments?

The OP was referring to the X3e patch, not the full version update which for $29 is very tempting (but I think the cheapest option is $99 for existing registered Cakewalk users).
