SONAR upgrades

I thought I was being cool. I got the new pc, SONAR 2.0XL, and the aardvark interface. Good pc, lots of power, and a peripheral 120 gig hard drive. I didn't want to go on line with it, cluttering it all up with cookies. But I wanted upgrades. I don't know why I have to buy stuff then immediately download upgrades, but I guess that's how it works. Why are they selling me 2.0 when there's a 2.1 AND a 2.2 now? What a pain. Plus you have to sit there for 20 minutes and download 2.1 so that you can sit there and download 2.2. Well, I just wanted to start fresh. Mind you I haven't done a single track yet, just got it all installed and hooked up. Well, I downloaded the 2.1, then it wouldn't install with the windows install wizard until I made it install again off of the cd, the 2.0. So now how can I tell if I have the 2.1? The icon and the program looks like the same thing that was already there. I emailed Cakewalk support, and surely they'll email me and help me, but on here you get varied opinions, and it helps to hash things out, and you get tidbits of info from people who use this stuff a lot. Also, aardvark told me to use the ASIO drivers when I work, that they're better than this new A/WDM they have also. But I've seen on reviews that the A/WDM is good. I guess it depends on what you're doing with it? Which I'll have to learn as I go along I guess like everyone else. Anyway, anyone has any advice for my foolish behavior, I'd appreciate it as always on here. I'm just annoyed that I bothered with the 2.1, I installed AT&T, which I already pay for anyway in the house, and figure I'll want to be on line to upload music once I write some or to get free stuff or still more upgrades. It just sucks the first thing I tried to do is problematic. Sigh. Thanks, Chris the guy who types too much.

You can always tell what version of any program you are running by launching the program and then clicking on the Help button.

On the help menu will be an item labeled About XXX (in this case, About Sonar). That will show you the version number, and the serial number as well if you ever need it.

Works the same for most (all?) Windows programs.

Why are they selling me 2.0 when there's a 2.1 AND a 2.2 now? What a pain.

When some manufacturer release their product, they have many thing to consider. Like the user, they only human being with mistakes here and there. Admit it, nobody's perfect. And not to mention that technology always developed since ever. That's the main reason why they release update. To fix something unperfect, and to adapt to newer technology, so user can have the best out of the software, without having to buy the whole new package again and again. It's free update anyway. And that's the sign of how hard they work the best for their loyal legal consumer. Think positive, I didn't see any pain here.

Also, aardvark told me to use the ASIO drivers when I work, that they're better than this new A/WDM they have also.

This is the good example. By updating to version 2.2, you'll get the benefit of using ASIO suported card with SONAR. So far then, ASIO can only be used by Steinberg softwares. But now... you can use it with SONAR. And believe me, ASIO works A LOT better than the regular driver, specially on handling multi input simultaneous recording & dealing with latency.

Anyway, my point is it's up to you to choose wether you like to upgrade or not. If you think your unupgraded version just fill all your demands, then feel free not to update. Technical wise :

"If it isn't broken, then don't fix it "

Wish you don't have any difficulties with your system. And hope you'll spend your valuable time on your music rather than your system.

I'm pretty sure when I bought Sonar, the box said SONAR 2.0XL and the CD said SONAR 2.1XL??? And then I upgraded to 2.2XL ;)

Work that out?

Porter

Porter and James, both well said. Yes, I do not want to waste time on things besides composition, including having to ask questions in forums. But it is confusing. Cakewalk emailed me back this morning, and answered only one of my questions I asked them. You folks in forums answer more questions than they do. And dachay, thanks as usual. You answered before Cakewalk did, with the same answer.

He's our very own award winning recording artiste, good looking "man-about-town" kind of guy:D

Thats more than can be said of me:( On all counts:)

All Hail Dachay...

Chris, I tell you what...
Cakewalk Customer Service always sent Dachay an Email along with your question. No wonder you'll get same answer faster here... :D

The 2.1 upgrade doesn't update the desktop icon but the 2.2 upgrade does. When you start up the program though, the splash screen should tell you what version you have.
