I have one question. I'm preety much burning my music at 16 bit, and doing well. But how do I compress my audio? Does Sonar/Cakewalk comes with a compression system? Can anybody clue me in, Redheadboy or Alchuck? Or anyone. I'm not familiar with compressing Audio, I'm not sure if i've done that already. But I want to know if Sonar comes with a compression system, if so,how do I access it. Thanks

Yes, SONAR comes with a compressor. Actually, two -- the simple Compressor and the FX Compressor/Gate.

That's the first step. Next, you need to understand what compression is and how to use it. It's not something that you simply turn ON and let it do its mysterious magic; it's an important recording technique and you nbeed to understand it to use it effectively. There are many articles on this and other sites that can explain that to you.

Sinku, You have to differentiate between the two types of compression.

File Compression, say from a wav file to an MP3 format is one kind of compression, where it saves/converts your whole audio track and squeezes it down into a smaller package, albeit making compromises on quality along the way. (MP3 is NOT CD compatible in terms of audio quality).

The other kind of compression (audio compression) is where you reduce the peaks of loudness leaving the quieter passages as they are.

As AlChuck says, Sonar comes equiped with tools for audio compression. And wav to MP3 can be done inside Sonar for an additional $30 or saved to a wav file and converted for free using a freeware conversion package.

Again, as AlChuck says, there are many articles on the web that explains the technical details of compression, the ProRec site has some good ones. It does need some understanding as it can be very complex but it is a fundamental for recording techniques.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Al Chuck, and paul881!

I need to know how to access the audio compression through Sonar. If you can briefly explain to me how to access it. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks guys for the fast reply. You guys are helpful and responsive. I'll read up more about the audio compression on a recommended site. Thanks

The compressors are DirectX audio effects. They are accessed just like all the other DirectX effects. If you don't know how to do that, read the manual (or help system), go through the tutorials...

sinku, after choosing the audio track you want, go to edit/audio effects. All your compressors/plug-ins should be there.

Thanks DavidK! I appreciate it...:o)

Thanks !DavidK for explaining how to find my compressor through Sonar. I thank you so much for that, as well as AL Chuck and Redheadboy for helping me out. You guys are great. I've been looking for the compressor through my Sonar program. Know, I will try to understand how to compress my audio and work magic. Thanks guys

Thanks DavidK!

Also I want to thank Al Chuck especially for his fast response and Info. Know I'm mixing my music down with clarity, I get no hissing sounds and everything is just lovely, but I did ran into problems with my I/O buffer size when recording audio. When I changed the buffer size down to 30KB instead of 64, my music was recording with no problem and it sounds great. Thanks guys for your help! AL chuck and DavidK to the rescue. If anyone e-mails me with problems I know exactly who to send them too! Thanks a bunch guys.

Manny
