sonar and new sblive drivers problems...

Hi all

I have installed the new winxp drivers for my SBLive Value(downloaded from Creative) but the playing back of wave files in SONAR 1.0 or 1.31 is stuttering.
If I record a wave file and then play it back it also stutters.

If I remove the sound drivers and the let winxp install the native drivers automatically, the problem is rectified.

The reason I need the new drivers installed is because the winxp native drivers do not give you the Creative mixer.

I have also tried installing Project KX drivers but the same stuttering happens.

Mp3s and media player and movie sound is fine.

Any help on this would be most appreciated.

Try to raise the latency, see if that helps...

Options -> Audio -> "the latency slider"
 
Fin bear, I had all the problems you are talking about and more with XP,sblive OEM value, Sonar 2 XL, and Athlon/via chips. I resolved mine by installing the full software pack from the Compaq website. Apparently there are several revisions of the software from creative. I`ve traied everything, including the kx drivers to no avail. I downloaded the pack from Compaq, and no more real problems.
 
You can also enable the MME drivers; Options/Audio/Advanced/check the "always use MME drivers"
This fixes the problem, but the increased latency may be an issue if you use certain midi functions (help me out here guys, I can't remember when the latency is an issue !?! ). I don't currently record any midi, so latency is not a problem for me. I and many others on this BBS with various Soundblaster products have never been able to use the WDM drivers under any circumstances with Sonar, even though WDM will work in other programs such as n-track studio., and no matter how many different drivers are tried. My SB is a PCI 128, if anyone out there knows the secret...
 
when recording midi, latency became a serious issue with my sb pci16. I could press a key and it would be about a 1/4 second before the synth played back the keypress. Recording audio was out because it would be the next beat before I heard the note I had played. So I found a Live Value for almost nothing. I bought the Live OEM value card but I couldnt get it to work with Sonar due to the incomplete driver package thats boxed with it. I couldnt record, and any install I did of Creative Recorder for the Live wouldnt work, not could I use the WDM drivers for the synths playback. I installed various packs from different sites around the world, and tried the KX drivers and couldnt get it to respond to Sonar. It wouldnt recognize the card as a wave device, nor would it record without creative recorder. There was a glitch with every driver pack I found as far as the recorder.
I re-installed all my pci16 software, and the pci16 card. Then removed the card and left the software, and installed the Live card and the loaded the driver pack from Compaq. It recognized the card, drivers, and apparently upgraded Creative Recorder to the live version for XP, but I had to use the MME drivers. I then unchecked the MME drivers in options>audio and reset them to WDM, when I started Sonar back up and re-profiled the card it worked fine.
I hope that helps you dude, it was a nightmare for me and I still have occasional problems where the EMU/creative chip combination on the card chokes with 4 to 5 midi tracks and 2 or 3 tracks of audio when mixing at times.
I`m trying to keep a cool head until Santa time when I`ll get a professional card instead of a game card.
 
Thanks , but I have tried everything and more as far as removing every trace of creative drivers, ini files, etc and re-installing and rebooting and re-installing and.....different PCI slots, IRQ's, etc. the only thing I haven't tried is changing the I/O and DMA buffer sizes manually, matter of fact, I will try that now, but I don't have a clue what settings would be appropriate

are you using a mb with a Via chipset? if so read this:
 
No, its an Intel D845GB MB with the 845 chipset, P4 1.6g, 512mb with XP. It comes with an onboard sound chip; I had tried removing all its drivers and disabling in BIOS, but no help to the SB. My demo version of ntrack studio works fine with the WDM drivers enabled, maybe I just need to mess with the buffer settings for Sonar?
 
Im using 64kb of i/o buffer
have you done a re-install of Sonar?
 
Dude, I can't believe I got it working!!! I manually wrote in the same DMA buffer values as what defaults in when MME is selected, and it worked ! in mono... I de-installed the creative drivers and re-entered the DMA values and now it works !. As far as the I/O buffer, what do you recommend? it is currently at the default setting of 256 KB
 
oops, spoke too soon, can't get internal midi to play , only 2 midi devices available now; ms midi mapper and soundblaster mpu-401, both I believe are for external midi. Not a huge deal except I need the Metronome click. In my Windows sound card properties MS GS wavetable synth and mpu-401 are the w2 choices, I choose the MS wavetable and it plays midi files in the windows media player... back to the drawing board
 
I opened Sonar and made screen shots of all my settings in options. I`d be glad to email those shots to you and you can try to dupe and see if it works.
I think our only major difference other than the BIOS settings, is I`m using an Athlon 1.34 ghz with Athlon/Via 761 chipset and 512 meg of ram.

I've found the problem. All I had to do was run Wave Profiler.
(Boy, do I feel dumb)
This fixed the problem totally.
I spent all of last night recording and exploring in Sonar.

Congrats!! It`s ok to be dumb sometimes, as long as you can laff at yourself your ok.
 
Toki, thanks for your help, yeah that would be appreciated if you would email those settings to me...I do have the WDM drivers working now, in stereo even! And MUCH lower numbers are defaulting into the DMA buffer settings and 64 defaulted into the I/O buffer setting., but I would be curious to see some other numbers...after un-installing the SB last night my computer was really acting up, like not loading programs, unable to open disk drives etc, but after a few restarts, started working. My original problem may have been due to the fact that a file named A3d.dll which is a WDM driver for soundblaster happens to have the same filename as a driver that was loaded for the built-in Soundmax chip! I deleted all of them, re-installed SB PCI 128, BUT, I can't get Sonar to use/rrecognize either the Microsoft wavetable synth or the Creative MPU-401. AAARRRGGG !!!The 2 midi device choices I have in Sonar are the MPU-401 and Microsoft midi mapper. Gone is the SB PCI 128 Synth choice I used to have. I can play midi files in windows media player, so I know the drivers are there. In Sonar's help under "won't recognize MPU-401", it tells me to " CHECK THE ALWAYS USE MME DRIVERS BOX" !!!!!! I cannot frickin' believe this !! That will fix the internal midi problem, but of course it does defeat my original purpose of using the WDM's . Is this to be expected- not able to use internal midi on a SB card if using WDM ??? Its not a big deal except I need the metronome clicks...is there a way around this?

no, cause if I can use both, you should be able to use both, and it most likely is a software issue, unless its a BIOS setup or a motherboard issue.

The met', i dont know. If we can fix the 1st then the 2nd wont be problem. pics coming.
