Hey guys, I'm new to Sonar and Sonar 6,...I'm coming from Adobe Audition 1.5 which I was getting pretty comfortable with...but... :o

Anyway, Drums have been my biggest hang up in my recording process... I've tried live drums, but my kit REALLY sounds like crap (I know, I've been down that road with tuning, and micing techniques :( ... still not as good as I want it to be..) I've tried loops and what not, but those are limited, and I don't have the patience anymore ...

I was looking into maybe EZ Drummer or something and then I noticed that Sonar has a Session Drummer 2 on it.....is this program/plugin all "there" right now, or is this just an option that is available?..

If it's there, how do I go about using it? Sorry, I'm not real technical...no midi background either :(

Thanks,
Rick

PS - If this is too "Newbieish", just let me know and I'll post it in that section.

I find sessiondrummer very usable. Its part of the install for Sonar6PE and is fairly easy and sounds decent. You can get expansion packs for the sounds, but there is plenty to learn and record with included.

Cool, I've the PE version.....It's just so weird starting "over" coming from A.A. 1.5 ....I'm like a cow looking at a new gate :(

Do you know if there is a tutorial section on using and setting up the drums for that?

Thanks!

Rick

Theres not a tutorial that I know of. Check over at the cakewalk forums.

I do have sessiondrummer in a very basic project we use as a benchmark at my work site. Click on the link in my sig and go to support->benchmarks. You'll see the Sonar6 test which is a bundle file you can open and has a very very basic instance of session drummer running. Maybe enough to get you started, though.

I just got EZ drummer today. I had a song down in 20 minutes :D Yup, its easy alright, sounds pretty good too. You just drag patterns, thats about it.

Cakewalk posted Session Drummer 2 tutorials on YouTube:

Good deal, I'll have to check that out....

I've also heard good things about the EZ Drummer stuff......sometimes I feel like such a retard on some of this recording stuff :o ... I think the biggest problem for me is that when I actually have a small bit of time to record,...that's what I want to do..Record...not "waste" that time on trying to learn something new.......but I have to learn this stuff if I want to progress to the next level......but I want to record.......and the cycle goes on and on :(

Thank you all for you help!!!!

I have EZDrummer, and it's excellent. You can drag-and-drop patterns (really good patterns) and then tweak them in Sonar.

One thing to remember, no matter how good your samples are, if you don't program good patterns it won't sound real. Good drummers hit the drums at different velocities, they ghost on the snare, they do things with the high hat, etc. I haven't used Session Drummer, but the patterns in EZDrummer are stellar. They are a great place to start, and if I can't find one that exactly matches what I want, then I just add a kick or drag the snare to a different beat.

It also has a "humanizer" function that plays different samples - so every snare hit doesn't sound exactly the same.

Here's some youtube videos of EZDrummer.

I watched the session drummer 2 tutorial on YouTube, and that looks pretty good... I went in my Sonar to try and pull that up, but there are no "patterns" or presets in there...Do I have to load these up from somewhere or what? ...I can just pull up the "screen" for the drummer 2...but I'm not finding anything for it in there...hmmm...

I'll check out the EZ drummer clips too :)

Thanks,
Rick
