I am not a Sonar user and I can't download the demo because I am a Mac user, But my friend (Lives in another state) Has been bugging me about a MIDI problem he has been having in Sonar 4.0.1

He imports a Standard MIDI file and it seems to play fine. He attempts to isolate one track and delet all of the others. He then saves it to replace the old file. When he opens it in Windows media player it works except his patch has changed to the Genaral Midi piano.

Anyone see what he is missing?

I know how to do this in Pro Tools but I have never even seen Sonar and they don't have a manual I can download on their support page.

Many posibility... what MIDI synth he uses to play in Sonar and Windows Media Player? I assume it's either softsynth or soundfonts, right?

Please re-open the mid file in Sonar, and tell me how he set track's output (channel, bank, patch, etc.)

He refuses to Learn a thing about MIDI so he would not know what that is if I asked. I have only been able to find screen shots of Sonar 1 on the web. Is the track output the Three pull-down menus on the Piano Roll view?

No, it's on Track View. The output lines with track's name etc. Anyway, what instrument should the track play?

Not sure what patch he is trying to get (I don't think he does either) but it seems to be the right one playing in Sonar. Here is the Procedure he is Following.

-I make sure Non-Destructive midi editing is turned on
-press ctrl+a to select all layers of the midi
-in the time scale i highlight the region at the begining of the file i want to discard
-I press edit and delete once i'm satisfied with the selection
-In the delete dialog I check "Events in track" and "Delete hole". Evethything else not mentioned remains unchecked
-Once finished I trim any unwanted melody off the end of the midi file, following the exact same procedure.
-I end up with a midi file with the start and end, parts of the original midi missing, giving me a cropped midi.
-I just save the midi and overwrite the original midi.
-Listen to it in windows media player and one of the instruments has changed from the original midi file. i don't know why or how, but it has just changed to a piano.

Seems like he has followed the right path. Well, it's a bit difficult to solve because lack of information (what MIDI synth, import/export setting, general setup, etc). It would be good to ask him join this BBS and talk about it. The only think I can guess is his import/export setting. But don't know for sure...
