More to follow after installation.
I am going to burn two seperate mixes, one fresh from 2.2, one fresh from Sonar. I will change nothing between the 2 mixes and we'll see what happens with this new audio engine.
Stay posted.

Initial review:

Installation: normal, pretty much a breeze. No problems.

New view and look: Holy shit. I feel lost, its going to take me a bit to get my flow back, but I ahve a 19 song project this weekend so that should work my chops up. It doesnt feel comfortable yet and it feels a bit confusing. THere are common buttons with different looks.

Sound: Heres the kicker I upgraded for.
I just finished doing some vocals with a band, and we listened back through everything afterwards on the monitors. They left, I installed 3.0, and brought the files we just finished back up.
Amen, brothers and sisters. Can I get a How-lay-fuckin-loo-ya?
The top end was instantly more glassy clean. The space around the instruments sounds better. The mix was flat out better but nothing had been changed, not a single fader, etc. I want to be cautious and think its my imagination. But no. I dont think it is. Everything in the mix just sounded better. The bass and bottom end sounded bigger, the mids and top more open. Overall everything sounds more open.
This is worth the $100 alone. There is no question that this is the cheapest best upgrade you can do if you are a Sonar user.
What pisses me off is that I guess something has been wrong with the early versions for 2 years and I've been stuck with it, fighting for space. The space is much more natural now. Well, I say much, its not like kick you in the ass more, but its enough to really open your eyes. Its the proverbial veil everyone speaks of. Its been lifted.
Please tell me if you have a similar experience.
I bounced a song down in 2.2 right before I installed. I havent moved anything, and I'm going to bounce it down in 3.0 and compare them side by side. I'll post em if I feel its worth it.

More to come. I'm happy though. The view is sticky yet.

I agree 100% and isn't it a beautiful thang!

:) Q.

Now post that shit to the clinic man!

NOw I can try out all those cool looking VST Virtual instruments.

Heya, Tube...

It's $100? I thought it was more than that. I'm going to have to go out and grab it. I'm tired of my Pro Audio 9. I mean, it works, but I just feel so behind the times with it.

I just don't think it will run on my PII 300.

Anybody know this? I'd hate to have to upgrade my whole comp for it. I know it would be worth it, but I just don't have the cash for something like that.

Scratch that idea. :(

Windows 2000/XP only, and recommended 1.2 GHz.

:(

I have a computer that beats those specs, but it's got an AMD processor in it, and my sound card isn't compatible.

Damn!

On a side note, Tube, I hear that Outspoken is pretty much no more. Sad thing, they were a great band, IMO. Sounds like David needs some serious time alone, though. Maybe he'll get it, and they'll get back to it. Kevin is touring with Tantric now, though, and Frank is playing with Turn 3.

That is not a problem. I actually think that an AMD beats P4 as long as you keep it under 2 GHz.

It is a problem, though, because my Lexicon sound card doesn't support AMD.

:(

Wow that's the first time I've heard that a specific card doesen't support a brand of processors.

Is your soundcard an ISA modell by any chance?

http://www.lexiconpro.com/core2/requirements.asp

It's old, for one thing. It works really well, but it just won't work on anything new. I'd love to be able to put it on my faster computer, but then I'd also have the problem of the kids messing with it. ;)

It seems like I'm out of luck unless I upgrade the soundcard, because even if I got an Intel setup in my other comp, I still couldn't use 2000 or XP.

Which is pretty weak, IMO, but oh well. You play with the hand you're dealt, I guess.

I still think it works with AMD. Have you tried it?

And an SB Live! isn't going for much these days. $20?

Well, I've got an SB Live! in my 1.4 machine already.

But, I want the kind of inserts that the lexicon gives me.

Until I stumble across enough money to do an upgrade for the whole machine, I'll probably just keep the set up I've got for now. :(

Oh god...the Lexicon Core2...

Great feature set...but...never was able to get it working. I HATE those things! HATE HATE HATE! The perfectly WRONG sound card to use...

(Can you tell I'm bitter? :) )

hehe. It definitely was a bitch to get working.

But, now that it does, it's great.

The thing that fixed it all for me, was oddly enough removing my LAN card.

*shrug*

Without that, all was good.

It's been a while since I did that (over a year) so I don't remember entirely, but that might have been an issue. It seems like if it was just that, I could have corrected it, though. Maybe not. I just remember it was a pain in the ass.

tubedude:

Can you upload a 20 second sample of both those mixes (one with 2.2 and one with ver.3) as a 16/44 wave file anywhere?

Preferrably, as a 24/48, but 24/44 would be fine too.

I would like to hear this.

Ed

P.S. I have a pretty fast DSL connection, so actually, a full song as a .wav file wouldn't be that big of a deal to download either.

Tubedude,
I hope you're right about this.I've held out,but your post has driven me over the edge.
