I have been using cwpa9 to make tabs for a few years and when I open the files in Sonar 2xl many notes (particularly on the first string) show up astrisks while others are fine.

I have confimed that the channels are correct and that the layout is configured for a midi guitar that corresponds to the file I am trying to load. When I play the guitar all the notes are displayed correctly on the fretboard but they do not all show up in the tab. What gives?

Thanks,
BB

update

After more testing I have more observations. It will only display tab entered from a midi guitar in mono mode on strings 2, 4 & 6. It will put all the notes from the 5th on the fourth, third on the second and astisks only on the first.

it will put tab on the first string if I use a file that has all notes on channel one and then select regenerate tab, (Method) midiguitar, 1st string channel 3. Go figure.

I think this feature is totally hosed in Sonar 2. The exact same setup works flawlessly in cwpa9.

I called Cakewalk Tech support and was devestated when an employee where I have my studio accidentally unplugged the phone while emptying a trash can. Words cannot describe the sick feeling after waiting for 20 minutes and only having spoken to the tech for a couple of minutes. The thing that really burns my ass is that the guy had my phone number and email address and he did not call me back or email any information after the disconnect. Lame.

Any ideas. I am wondering if anyone really uses this feature. I have been using it daily in my job since cwpa9 came out.

Cheers, BB

Yes - something definately is weird in Sonar with this feature.

I have had some success by getting it to Regenerate Tabulature and then selecting different options and finally resetting it back to the original setting., (if that makes sense).......

Also, I have seen if you right mouse click on one note and tell it what string it should be one, all the other asterisks which represent this note will magically turn back into the correct number.

These things only seem to work on CWPA9 tracks I have archived.

For anything new in Sonar =>

The thing that I can't get around is writing a MIDI gtr part, and then telling it to generate tab - any option I choose ends up plonking all the notes on the bottom E string from the first fret up to the 20th - it doesn't use any of the other strings irregardless of what settings I use. The only way I can fix this is to ALT-CLICK and drag the incorrect note to the right string - EVERY SINGLE DAMN NOTE!!!!!!! Aaaarrrggghhh!

The module is hosed I am sure...

An Email from cakewalk...

Follow these instructions to fix this problem:

1. Open your file and choose Edit | Select | All.
2. Choose Edit | Copy and select all the options.
3. Choose File | New | Normal.
4. Delete all the tracks in this file.
5. Choose Edit | Paste.

It did not work for me. Maybe I did something wrong.

All that looks like it is doing is creating a new template and copying all the information into the new file.

As Sonar does use a different file format than CWPA9 I guess it is conceivable that the tab module might get confused.

I will try it out and see what I get this end.

Thanks for passing the info on - either way :)

Phone call

Today I got a break and called cakewalk on a more secure line. I managed to tell someone about my problems. I emailed a file that illustrated exactly what was happening and the file did the same things for him. It opened perfectly in cwpa9 but in Sonar 2 XL it contained all the errors I mentioned.

Hopefully it will lead to some resolution. I am anxious to create all kinds of horror on myself while trying figure ou this program on the job.

I have nothing to offer in the way of suggestions but I am curious as to the outcome. I could never get the tab to work out...

Tab world

I use the tab function in CWPA9 daily. It is one of the best things in my life. It works great. It will crash if I have a Bass Neck displayed and I play b or high e on the guitar but that is easy to avoid. I love it.

I believe this is going to require a patch to the exe to make it work. I was hoping for something quick but the more I think about how it works I doubt it's a user modifiable setting.

I will continue to post my experiences. Likely someone else will have the problem too. I am wondering if Sonar 1 has this error too.

It is a bug

I received an email from cakewalk this morning regarding the tab problem. There is a bug in the staff view with tablature that will be addressed in the next patch that they said would be released in Sept. Hopefully it will be sooner than later.

Cheers, BB

Thanks for letting us know!

Now.........how many days until September?

And, BTW, you have fallen for the oldest tech support trick in the book - "Yep, we'll fix that in the next patch, due in September"

You see - they didn't specify which year and you didn't ask ;)

Fingers crossed!

In my last reply I gave them the names of 10 registered owners of cakewalk products that I am soley responsible for their purchase. While 10 people upgrading isn't a ton of money it is pretty good to fix something that already worked before.

You are correct, they may just blow it off but I will return it if it isn't fixed by the end of September because the evaluation period will give me that long. I do not have time to even fool with Sonar without functioning tab because I have to have it and CWPA9 works just fine.

I am just looking for an opportunity to get to really familiar with a more contemporary software platform and get paid to do it. Productivity must come first. I have what I really need currently. I can wait.

Cheers, BB

Good on you, BB -

If more people stood up to software companies, then the quality would be a whole lot better. I find it amazing that Sonar has been out for this long without it being fixed!

Ciao,

P.S. (I won't tell you which software company that I work for.....)
