sonar 2 compression

how do you know wether your actuall compressing -there is a row of light (input -40db on top) and below -(-40db gain reduction) with green to red colors (in the FX compressor/gate) what are these lights telling me -neither the book sonar power or the manual really explain how to view these lights
 
The top row shows you your input signal - what you are sending to the compressor.

The second row shows how much that signal has been reduced as a result of the compressor's settings.

Errr... that's absolutely not the best compressor you'll find. If you have the XL version, try the Timeworks compressor or look here for a new one... ;)

One of the things that makes it bad is in fact the bad readings it gives you. No real scale at all. You need to guess in most cases (or take an educated guess at lest).
