ok i was thinking that it would be posible for someone like me to lay down all the tracks to the song, then send each track seperatly to someone online with all the right studio and editing programs to fix up the tracks and make them sound studio quality, and have that person send the whole song back sounding good....i dunno its an idea is anyone up to trying this with me because i dunno what im doing lol

My studio offers a package for such a service -- a number of people here have taken advantage of it....

Check out my studio site...

If you take Blue Bear's service, ask him to throw in a commentary on your tracking - the education there could be even more valuable in the long run than his mixing and mastering.

What you're asking for is a mixing engineer. Blue Bear, by my reckoning, certainly is one of those. You should consider mastering afterwards, which is a different process. I don't think Blue Bear is really set up for mastering. Mastering gives you a different set of ears, also, which can often be a good thing. Choosing a mixing engineer close to you is usually also a good thing, because many decisions about mixing are opinions, and a good mixing engineer will ask for your input in the decision making process.
This is not to say that Blue Bear can't make your recordings sound a whole lot better, I'll bet he can. What you'll get is what he thinks your music should sound like, which could be a good thing. That is also a different set of ears. Also note that careful mixing may take as much as 4-6 hours per song, and is paid for by the hour, which don't necessarily come cheap. As in many other things, you often get what you pay for.-Richie

True - while I can get people's levels up and do some mild tweaking, I'm not setup as a mastering facility... (and don't advertise myself as one either!)

Well, not necessarily -- if someone also includes a a reference clip of a commercial mix that represents what they were going for, I'll take that into account. Mind you, it's the quality of the tracks themselves that determine much of the "potential" of a mix....

True - but there are also big-bang-for-the-buck values such as the package pricing I provide. Obviously, at my price point, I can't spend extra hours on edits/cleanup without additional costs, but if the tracks are already in good shape, clients get a high degree of mix quality.

Sorry - don't mean for this to sound like advertising -- I'm simply addressing some specific points that Richard brought up!

You can also collaborate with others of like mind on sites such as http://recordingproject.com/bbs/

They provide space to store and exchange mp3 tracks. It's not studio quality or anything but like they say, another pair of ears

Well, Blue Bear, it might sound like advertising, but remember, I'm not a member of the spam police. And if this board helps hook a newbie up with a competent, honest mixing engineer, which I think you are, it has done him a favor. As you and I know, the world is full of imposters, and you have to kiss a few frogs before you find a prince.. My real point is to help the nice newbie avoid sticker shock, or worse, believing that the guy who says, Oh, I can do that for $50.", probably wasting $50. My impression is that you are an honest mixing engineer who will delivers good value for whatever you charge.-Richi

One more thing to remember (I didn't see anyone else touch on this point so...) is that there is only some much you can do with poorly tracked material. If the tracking sucks, it will limit the options the mix engineer has during mixdown. It will also increase your budget if there is more time being spent trying to fix the crap before duing the actual mixdown.

Actually, that's what I was getting at with this comment -
Mind you, it's the quality of the tracks themselves that determine much of the "potential" of a mix....

But it's an important point that bears repeating!

Which is why I suggested that Bruce's feedback on tracking issues might in the long run be the most valuable part of his service. Anyway, the original poster seems to have lost interest;)

Blue Bear & Richard Monroe

I went back and re-read the posts and you are right, you did touch on the tracking points. Man I must of still been half asleep when I read it the first time  :o

I stand corrected. ;)

yeah, original poster may have bonked out for a minute, but other newbies are getting helped too(especially with the $50 line and the part about having high quality trackings in the 1st place).

thnx
