the gist:
some presonus firebox users discovered that their fireboxes don't really record at 96khz-- when they are set to 96khz, they merely sample at 48khz and double each sample. apparently there is a firmware update in the works to correct it (if you care) and you should check back on the presonus website periodically to see when it's done.

ah haha. Fantastic.

But don't mock them - they can totally hear the 35 kHz-range frequencies they've been recording. I know I just can't enjoy a piano piece anymore unless its played on a 17-octave piano, using the full range of the instrument.

there is a strong case that has been made that anything above 44.1khz is a waste given the limits of human hearing. on the other hand some smart dudes in various mediums have posited that higher sampling frequencies (88.2 +) have better high frequency filtering (i wish i could elaborate), and also make a significant difference any time you start to manipulate audio with any sort of effects processing-- particularly dynamics (eq, compression, etc.). i have definitely found the latter to be the case, but haven't really speak to personal experience with the former as i work at 88.2, but made that change at the same time i shifted interfaces (for like the 12th time).
