This is a local Blue Grass band that came in and did three songs. One of the nicest bunch of guys I've ever had the pleasure to work with. Four pieces, stand up bass, mandolin, guitar and banjo.
Hey Dan (Dtb), this is right up your ally. Hope you like it.

Hi Mr Track Rat. Muy Bien, I just love those harmonies. I never listen to this music before. Pleasure to listen too. Great music to write emails with, the noise in the internet place is unbearable. Great, thankyou.

listened to "back at u"..
Good stuff..whole mix sounds a bit distant, it probably wasn;t meant to be "in your face" as the singer says..
good work...

very nice, mr. rat. this band has a great sound, and the recording is well done. how was this recorded? I am gonna put up some that was done wed. nite, recorded with one 603s hanging about seven and a half feet in the air, with the band in a circle around it. turned out pretty good. you captured this band very well. bluegrass rules.

Erland, I really appriciate your ears sir.
Roker, thanks man.
Dan, glad you seen this. I was going to do this the old fashioned way but ended up tight mic'ing. A C-3000 on the dog house bass about 16" out in front of the treble side F hole, a Neumann KM-184 on the guitar (D-28), C-1000 on the mandolin and an SM-57 on the banjo. The lead vocal was through an Octava MC-319 and the backing vox was through an AT-4047.

sounds great to me.. professional for the style..

It took me back to the days of being pounded by my Dad with Slim Whitman and Freddy Fender.. :D

That,s great. I think you captured it well. There is a certain "rawness" that comes through.

awesome material and well recorded.

i love bluegrass and nugrass... maybe its just b/c i live in the mountains of virginia, but.... i think acoustic music with roots in appalachia is about to explode on the main stream music scene.
maybe not old-school bluegrass, but the modern version (nugrass) may. where i live its everywhere! so flat-pickers everywhere, get ready for the big time. :)

time will tell.

Hey TR - Man, that really took me back...back to a time when I was a kid, and all my relatives would get together and play bluegrass music and have sex with each other. Hrm, good times, good times.

lmao...sounds great, man. I love artists that aren't jerks. I mean, I don't KNOW any, personally, but if you say such people exist, I'll take your word for it. :D :D :D I HAVE to get an upright bass. Yeah, sounds great.

Well done Track! Captured that High Lonsome Sound in Ballwin!

Was this your first time recording Bluegrass or had you done it before?

I love bluegrass. I've never been able to figure that out because it's so different from anything else I like. There are plenty of other genres you can say that about, but I don't like them like I like bluegrass. Whatever.

Good job on this one. Nicely recorded. Real tight harmonies. Material-wise I think I like bluegrass that moves faster than this one did.

I noticed something in the middle break around 2:27-2:40. Seemed like someone was whispering or keeping time vocally or something. Am I full of it?

Anyway, I liked it.

Sam, thanks man, l always appreciate your ears.
Smokey, it's funny you say that. It was pretty much one takes all day. Just kinda spontainious, ya know what I mean?
alex, I was raised on it too. I grew up on Doc Watson records (among othes).
Chris, ya know what a stripper does with her asshole? She drpps him off at band practice.:D As hard as it is to believe, musicians AND nice guys. Check the picture of these guys. And the dog house bass is so cool. I noodled around on it a little. I want one.
Scott, thanks man. Not my first blue grass band. I've done a few others. And i'm high in Ballwin but I ain't lonesome. :D
Trip, I don't know what you could be hearing. I listened to the MP3 that I made (I didn't download it) and I can't hear anything in that region but maybe a little pick noise and I thought I heard a guitar pick strick the top. I did play it backwards though and there were some Satanic messages around there.:D

That would fit the Traditional slots on any store cd rack as well as anything I ever heard. And I`m jus a redneck from alabama. I`m guilty of likin that kinda stuff really a lot. :)

You do some superb recordings ace and I`ve learned a lot listening to em'. But..., could ya maybe turn the snare and kick up a little more next time. :)

Sounds good Track Rat..........I can't imagine anything you could do to make it sound better.....

Very nice. I really like Bluegrass music. Always have, even when I was a young rocker :D. I don't know what it is. Maybe the simplicity...but then again, usually when these guys get going the picking is unfreakingbelievable. Part of the reason I can go listen to the Grand Ole Opry again and again (not the televised porition...the other part. They get BG bands in there quite a lot). I used to love to stroll around Opryland theme park when I would visit Nashville and stop in the shade and listen to BG at the C.F. Maritin Bluegrass theater with a tall lemonade and just sit and listen. I wonder if a bluegrass band would take someone who can just sing and not pick worth a crap...hmmm...:D

Nicely done.

Nice job Track Rat! I really like the mix. I missed the chance to do a bluegrass band recently. Hope another opportunity comes up.
Liked the other tune you posted also. Kinda George harrisony with the cool horns. Sorta like Savoy Truffle.

Very well recorded Mr TR. I have always like Bluegrass Music but can only take so much of the Nasily Vocals. These dudes sound Great!

Wonder where they copped the panel van? I want it! LOL

I looped this tonight while I was on the treadmill.I love the harmonies.Just a great bluegrass tune all the way around.Tight playing and singing. Thanks for sharing this one with us.

Hey Track Rat--these guys are pretty good! I thought the recording was very good overall, but I do have a couple of comments. First, the lead vocal is too loud compared to the track. Thats what makes it sound distant. When I crank the background up between vocals, its pretty awesome what you have captured, but the fine detail is obscured due to the level of the voice. I'd keep the background vocals where they are and notch the lead vocalist (whos damn good, by the way) down a little.

The banjo needs some work, but I'm not sure what. It seems like its missing the lower resonance, like you EQ'ed it out.

Other than that, I'm envious as hell because I'd KILL to be able to do sessions like this. Its also nice to hear some bluegrass here on the board. My crits are minor tweaks and should no way take away the positives for a job well done. I have listened to a lot of bluegrass though and thats why I said what I said. Post some more!
