Hi - I posted this song about addiction a while ago and had a great response, since when I've redone it and would really welcome comments - what I really want to do is to replace the synth sounds with a cello leading to a string quartet in the chorus bits. Any classical musicians out there?
The song is 'Dangerous Friend' at http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/?aid=3180/singles
nb I have other songs at www.nboyd.net

second link did'nt work, I seem to be having trouble listening on nowhere radio. I always get a "missing codec" message. just me?

Sorry aboput the website - I'm sorting that out. The problem with NWR I don't understand.

If you're getting missing codec then there could be a number of problems.

One, you're using Windows Media Player to player the SC PLS streams. Check your player setting on NoWhere Radio.

Two, you're using Windows Media Player and the MP3 format is unsupported. The artist can either re-encode and re-upload the MP3, or you can choose to use a more compatible player (I still swear by WinAmp, free and powerful).

Three, your Windows Media Player is out of date. It's a bit of a beast. Make sure you allow it to automatically download codecs, and that it's the latest version from the MS website.

Four, your mime type and file associations are messed up. Extremely common. Make sure ASX remains associated with Windows Media Player, while M3U gets associated with an MP3 player, such as WinAmp, or MusicMatch, etc.

Sounds like you are using some 'paranoiaware' that is falsifying the 'referer' variable for your browser. This will always trigger direct linking problems, turn it off, or just set it to remove the referer variable completely.

I was trying to listen to the track at work (gov't pc), and I don't have admin rights to make changes. I just tried to listen at home, and got this:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

WTF???

Read the post a couple above the last one I made.

Hey, cardiff jon, are you receiving my e-mails? Sent a few to you a couple months ago that apparently never got through, wondering if the last one got through...

W.

Yes thanks, W, and I hope you got the reply.
Anyone going to review this damn track?

Hey dude, guess I didn't, there was a DNS outtage the other day in the texas area where my servers are, so that could've nailed my e-mail. Try re-sending, and just in case, PM me here, so we don't have to yo you too much!

in case anyone else is having problems listening on nowhereradio. I use media player and I could'nt get the streams to work from nowhereradio. I tried a bunch of stuff but what it ended up being was weird. I had to go to the "change player" option and choose something other than media player. If I choose media player, no workee. Choose something else and all is well. wtf?

Works fine for me. Strange.

Nice sounds.

One of my best friends ODed on heroin last year. I feel you here.

The song needs some meat, kinda has an interlude feel to it. Needs more of a 'feature' vibe I think. The vocals on the left are unintelligable...too quiet.
Anyhow, cool for what it is. Might have more impact if I could hear the fast vox.

Another part could give this a lot of movement which it doesn't have now. something like the 'good times we've had' kinda thing you know? Just to break the monotony.

Just ideas.

TravisinFlorida,

Your media player is most definately not configured properly. If you can be more specific that 'no workee', I can suggest a mode of action.

W.

no workee = missing codec. I change player at nowhereradio and it works. The thing is, I'm still using media player after changing players.

Yep, your media player is not configured properly. Check the file associations for both m3u and asx.

W.

I don't have m3u or asx under my file types. What's up with that? I have media player 10 and it's setup to automatically download codec's when needed. Any ideas here?

If m3u and asx aren't listed, than that right there is a problem, because m3u and asx playlist types are exactly what I use on NWR to ensure streams are opened in appropriate players. ASX is a windows media playlist, m3u is a Shoutcast, or WinAmp playlist, windows support for the latter is pretty weak.

Windows Media support for SC PLS streaming is extremely limitted, so the ASX generally points directly to the mp3. If the mp3 is encoded in a format that WIndows Media doesn't support, you are screwed. Windows Media Player does NOT support every codec available, that being said, there really isn't a single player that does, but many more available that support further codecs. The M3U type points towards an SC PLS stream, which typically modifies the encoded type slightly, and is probably allowing you to listen. WMP is probably opening these files as a default, and thus you're having some success with it.

Different people have different configurations, there is no one solution that works for everybody, it's best not to suggest an errant configuration such as yours however. If what you have set up works for you now, then leave it that way. There's billions of possible configurations, stick with what works, until it doesn't work.

The best suggestion I have for this case is that the artist uses a more standard codec for the mp3, thus allowing more compatibility.

seems kinda odd that some of us are having problems listening on nowhereradio only. I don't think that sugguesting to try changing the player on nowhereradio is any big deal. It works for me, it will probably work for the others that get the missing codec message. Its not even a configuration change in media player, it's just a setting on nowhereradio.

Actually, it's not a setting ON nowhereradio (I am the one who created NWR, so I better know), it's simply changing the file extension for your local machine. The problem is exactly as I described it, your associations are mucked up, happens all the time.
