Something a little more 'mature'

This is a demo of a song that I just submited for a compilation album being done by the music club at my university. I've heard the other guys' stuff, I'm pretty sure this one will make the cut ;)

Over the past year or so, a lot of the stuff I've written has been a little on the pop/marketable side. I tried to do something a little more 'mature' with this one.

I performed/programmed all the instruments and vocals myself.

Once again I'm stuck for a title.

Notes:

The mix is kind of rough.

I'd like to add a tambourine and some more percussion during the choruses.

The harmony line is a little sloppy, also it is too high for me so it doesn't sound so great on the harmonized ad libs. But for the real thing I'll be getting someone else to sing (the harmony.)

I'll also be getting a 'real' bassist.

For the acoustic guitar riff at the end, I mic'ed the nylon guitar too close to the neck so I got too much finger noise (sounds like 'guitar drool'). I'll be fixing that eventually.

The second electric guitar in the right speaker during the chorus kinda clashes with the guitar in the left guitar (the tones are too similar.) I'll probably redo the part with another guitar if I can get access to one.

Equipment:
Drums: A soundfont played thru my SB Live Value
Guitars: Fender custom shop set-neck Telecaster into Line6 POD, a $15 steel string acoustic (the brand name is "Plum Blossom", made in China -- sounds *amazingly* good for the price), and a Yamaha C-70 classical guitar (this one was not such a good buy)
Bass: cheap Ibanez into ART Tube MP
Mic: SM57 into Art Tube MP

All goes into Delta 1010 @ 16-bit/48kHz (I haven't gotten 24-bit versions of some of my software so I'm stuck at 16-bit for the meantime.) Even at 16-bit, the Delta sounds so much better than my old SBLive.

Thanks to Shaky Tee for recommending the upload site.

Your comments please, and another thing, what genre would this song be considered?

Me likes...music kinda sounds ChiliPepper-ish in parts....besides the stuff you mentioned and the abrubt ending, the recording is great....i like the bass line, so make sure if you do get a bass player, make him play the exact line....

I guess as far as genre Id have to say Alternitive.....

Great job on the song so far....

awesome vocals.

Wow, those drums sound great for soundfonts. I think that the bass guitar might need some more los, for a bit more power, but it sounds good.

I was expecting the 16 bit mush, but it actually sounds very clear. 24 bits will knock you out.

I think that the instruments can come up a tad bit in relation to the vocal.

The harmony worked well, and the eq on the voxes was good.

I like the song too. It will make a very good addition to the compilation CD.

peace

Chilli Peppers?? Whoa, wasn't expecting that. Actually I was listening to a lot of Sting around the time I wrote this.

Gidge, what do you mean about the abrupt ending? Doesn't it fade out?

Yes I'm quite pleased with the drums considering what I'm using. Although, this soundfont was not for free. Cost me US$25 (which is relatively cheap compared to many E-Mu or Akai samples)

Cyan: yes, the Delta still sounds pretty decent at only 16-bit. It really blows the SBLive away. I really like it alot. Ever since I got it, I feel like recording is so much more fun. I recorded another song for some friends and when they showed it around at school people were shocked that I was able to get such great results recording at home. I've tried 24-bit and it's totally awesome. Just wish I could get my hands on Sound Forge 5.0.... When I do, I'll be working at 24-bit.

Cyan, glad you like the vocals. Gidge, what do you think? I'm kinda 50/50 as to whether I should redo it (the lead vocal) or not. There are certain words or phrases that I'm only about 80% happy with. But if you guys think it's OK the way it is, then maybe I won't re-record it.

Any comments about arrangement or structure? Does anyone find it *boring*? (I hope not, but if so, let me know so that I can do something about it)

I am hearing a Chilli Peppers thing going on there too, nice and yes the vocals are sweet.

Vocals are very sweet....so sweet that I can no longer blame my SM57 for my crappy vocals (oh well, I knew it all along)....If you think you can outdo that vocal, go for it, but this one rocks.....

As far as the arrangement its fine to me...But if you are looking to market it commercially, its safe to assume it is too long...everything from around 4:30 on would have to go right off the bat....the intro could be cut in half....other cuts also...but hopefully you arent looking to do that and will leave it just as it is...

As far as the fade, it starts to fade out fine and then all of a sudden cuts off....maybe the wave file is fine, but the mp3 just cuts out....
