I'm quite sure they're cr*p, but my aunts attic clean unveiled a pair of boxed Sony F-230A mics.

Unbalanced outputs of course. Dynamic, uni-directional, low impendace (200).

Any thoughts on it?

I thought i´d just put them on ebay, I know there are collectors who´ll pay $20 for a boxed mic, regardless of the quality.

I had a pair of these that came with a stereo in the mid 70's (my fathers) It had a turntable on top, tuner on the front and at the side of the turntable was a compartment that took a cassette tape unit that could be swapped out with a 8 track tape cartrige player unit.

Both sony and sanyo made several models like this. I came across some cassette tapes of me singing through these actual mics about 5 years ago. The cool thing was you could play an LP and sing to it and record the lot onto casette. Sony were infact way ahead of the game when it came to Karaoke machines :D

You gonna post those in the MP3 clinic for us all to "evaluate?" :D

That makes it all the more valuable. We could "evaluate" your evolution as an artist and recordist. It could be a valuable learning experience for the community. :D

Oh, if that's the case I should post some 80's video of a band I was in. Wow...just, wow. Let's just say, one of our originals was "She's got a mustache". Awesome.

Reminds me of a tune I did in the early 80's called "Heavy Debby." No known recordings exist.

I'd better keep quiet, I started out in Heavy Metal, no song titles, to embarrising. Very Spinal Tap though.

It's probably not a good thing that I recognize all of those references AND think they're funny. My wife watched Spinal Tap with me once...she didn't get it. At all.

Sorry, but I'm not surprised. That's my wife and anything by Monty Python.

How can you *NOT* think that's funny? Maybe estrogen wrecks your sense of humor.

What was this thread about again? :)

We have got to hear this one!

:D

Those old mics might surprise you if you try them, especially for acoustic instruments or unusual applications. I have a pair of old Sony electret mics that really get nice detail on acoustic, classical guitar and percussion. I also have an old Tascam dynamic mic that came with a PortaStudio from the 80's that works quite well for recording piano forte, harpsicord, clavinet and recorder. With a DI or mic pre those cheap mics can really come to life.

Spinal Tap AND Monty in the same thread!
Whoot!
Thanks for the chuckles guys, needed them this morning;-)

Spinal Tap, well, there's some great jokes in there, but on the whole the movie just bores me a bit.

Spinal Tap are nothing compared to the immortal Bad News, the 1980´s metal band by the guys from The Young Ones. You Tube ´em for a laugh.

@ bassbrad: I've got a Sony Elected too, but thats´a condenser mic, still have to try it though, but I think it's safe to say these are cr*p.
