I am an emcee, but the only beats I have been able to get are free ones from mp3.com. Everytime I try to find out how people make beats, I can never seem to get a clear answer. Can someone please give me information about making beats? like equiptment, what they do, price ranges (preferably cheaper), and where I can get samples or drum beats or whatever I need. I will really appreciate any help. Also, if u produce beats and want to do a collaboration (I emcee) then reply. thanx

JS here is my two cents:

If you have never ever screwed around with equipment then be warned that you are in for a bit of a learning curve no matter what you start out with. Don't expect to get the latest keyboard or drum box and start cranking out the bombs off the bat. However, you sound like you want to start off with used, cheap(but decent) stuff anyway. In my opinion, you can't go wrong if you get an Ensoniq EPS 16+ keyboard. This keyboard is around 10 or 11 years old and is still very useful and gets the job done. It has 16 bit sampling, effects, 16 track sequencer, and a built in floppy disk drive for storing your songs. It has no built in sounds but screw that because you can find tons of sounds(including free ones off the net) for it. It can be had for around 350 to 400 bucks all the time on ebay. It's big brother, the ASR10 can be had for around 750-800. Either of these boards is very easy to operate(believe me - I have friends who own 16+ and they are not the brightest people you could meet). For recording, the Roland VS880ex is great for around $600 used but I understand that you have to be patient with learning it. So for around $1000 bucks you can have a solid beginning to a home recording studio.

there are heaps of free, yes free drum sequencers available on the net that don't sound half bad... if not buy something like rebirth to produce backing tracks.... software is the cheaper way to go...for down loads try

www.harmony-central.com

there is a freeware program i really like called "taureg" its a sequencer with a drum machine and a bass synth

dont get free beats, that takes the fun out of it. go online and look for an mc-303 by roland, it'll cost about 175.00 dollars and its just what you need. it has drum sounds, synth , bass etc. everything you need for a beat, all in one machine. now that machine only makes the beat, to get the beat on a c.d. you need at least a 4 track digital recorder (or tape) they are pretty cheap now probably 200.00 bucks. then you need a mic, ask around about those, but to start you can just get a piece of shit and plug it into the recorder and go.

ummm...im a beginner too, so i dont have a whole lot of advice....you can use any beats that are on my soundclick page...youll have to clear some samples, and most of its not that good anyways...hopefully you can find something...if you do use anything, just get at me here or on soundclick and send me a finished version

what part of pa do you live in? do you have a budget?

I MIGHT BE OUT OF LINE HERE AND IF SO ITS OK TO SAY IT BUT ARE YOUR VOCAL SKILLS THAT UP TO PAR OR SO FAR AHEAD THAT YOU CAN AFFORD TO TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE OF BEAT MAKING. BECAUSE IF THEY ARE NOT THEY WILL SURELY SUFFER SOME DEGREE OF NEGLECT AS YOU TAKE ON THE FOLLOWING TASK

1.SORTING THROUGH THE BS AND FINDING THE RIGHT GEAR WHICH YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH.
2. LEARNING THAT GEAR
3.SORTING THROUGH AND FINDING THE RIGHT SOUNDS (WHICH IS A CONSTANT JOB)
4. THEN LEARNING TO TWEEK THEM ALL AND MIX THEM AS WELL AS THE VOCALS.
5. tHEN SPENDING THE TIME TO GET IT OUT THERE TO BE HEARD.

I DONT SAY ALL THIS TO DISCOURAGE YOU. I SAY IT TO SAY KNOW YOUR POSITION AND PLAY IT WELL UNTILL YOU ARE READY TO SHIFT POSITION. AND BE SURE OF WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO SHIFT.

sOME PEOPLE WHO YOU SEE AS TRIPLE THREATS THAT RAP, DO BEATS , AND GET IT OUT DIDNT START OUT THAT WAY. AND IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY YOU CAN SEE WHERE THEY AR SACRIFICING IN THEIR CRAFT. SOME ARE VOCALLY GREAT WITH OK BEATSKILLS AND SOME ARE BEAT MASTERS WITH OK VOCALS. SOME HAVE BOTH BECAUSE THEY HONED THERE SKILLS ON ONE AND THEN LEPT OVER TO THE OTHER. THERE ARE PLENTY OF BEATS AND COLLABORATIONS HERE AND ELSEWHERE ON THE NET. WHICH WILL ALLOW YOU THE TIME YOU NEED TO DEVELOP YOUR VOCALS ( GRANTED I DONT KNOW OR ASSUME TO KNOW WHAT YOUR VERBAL SKILLS ARE LIKE NOR DO I PASS JUDGEMENT ON THEN). IF YOU LOOK AROUND THIS BOARD YOU WILL SEE THE CATS WHO HAVE INVESTED THE TIME IN THERE LYRICAL SKILLS ARE CONSTANTLY GETTING BEATS THROWN AT THEM.
I SAY THIS BECAUSE HERE YOU HAVE A LOT OF BEATMAKERS,MIXERS, VOCAL COACHES AND ALL THAT.

iF YOU ARE STILL DECIDED ON THIS MANNER OR TORTURING YOURSELF i WOULD SAY DL THE REASON DEMO FROM PROPELLERHEADS AND ALSO THE LIVE DEMO FROM ABLETON. tHEY ARE BOTH GOOD PROGRAMS. THE LIVE DEMO IS FULLY ACTIVE YOU JUST CANT SAVE ANYTHING ON IT. FROM THERE I WOULD SAY INSTEAD OF SEARCHING THE NET FOR SOUNDS SEARCH THESE FORUMS BECAUSE YOU WILL SAVE A LOT OF TIME. THERE IS A CERTAIN LEVEL OF QUALITY HERE THAT WILL SAVE YOU TIME IN SIFTING THROUGH. ONE WORD OF ADVICE THO DONT SPEND ALL YOUR DAYS JUST SEARCHING TO GET MORE STUFF. EAT UNTILL YOU ARE FULL NOT UNTILL YOU ARE STUFFED.

AND AS ALWAYS THIS IS ALL JUST MY OPINION . GOOD LUCK TO YOU IN WHICH EVER WAY YOU GO PLAYA
