My friend Constance is a singer/songwriter, and she has recorded a few songs to put out a CD with. This is one of three I worked fairly closely with her on; I did the rhythm section arrangements, and I am playing everything (drums, bass, keys, rhythm guitar, etc) except the lead guitar solo, which is my best friend Jimmy Dacey. Constance is, of course, singing.

Whatcha think? :D

Engineer, producer, arranger & performer? You're a generous fellow.
Her voice stands too far out front for me. It needs a little cushioning - as it's fairly strident & occasionally nasal.
Straight after the solo the vocal sits better but as things quieten it pushes again.
Maybe a little EQing to warm her voice up & bring it back to the backing?
The melody & lyrics remind me of the various female counterparts to Meatloaf.
Good solo - it fitted the sound & song well.

It stands out a little on my studio monitors too; but it passes the "car test", strangely. She wanted them more out front than I'd have placed them. But I'll try warming it up and see what happens...

My friend Jimmy will be pleased to hear that you liked the solo; the guy thinks he sucks. Really.

Good songwriting and performance. Nice guitar work, also the piano in the intro. I agree with Ray about the vocal... to me it sounds kind of peaky in the 2 kHz range on some sounds. I'd like to hear the lows of the bass gtr more.

Nice mix. Vocals are too loud and could do with some different processing.

Some pro mastering could really crispen up the mix also.

So, what mic did you use to make her sound like a 30 something white chic? Just kidding....as said before, vocals out front a bit to much, and a bit nasal....might eq to warm it up some....otherwise nice session!

HAHAHAH!! Well, she *is* a 30-something white chick... :)

Sounds like I have a bit of warming to do... :)

Very nice, good arrangement. I can only echo the others about the lead vox. Its a lil nasal and perhaps a lil loud. Very nice song. :)

Thanks, I'll be sure to tell her. I have one mroe from that series of sessions to post, I think the vox blend is a little better. More challenging piece though...

Tim's observation is right in the balllpark - somewhere between 1.5 - 4.0K yook some of the bite off the vocals. The eq change will determine it's loudness level afterwards.
You have a great tune here - strong vocals and really great backup on all instruments. Looking forward to hearing the remix.....

:D :) :D :)
