Okay, I have seen all these "this vs. that" stuff on here and a couple other BBS's, so I thought I should post mine now....(evil grin)

1- SSL vs. AMEK consoles
2- NEVE vs. API mic pre's
3- Lexicon PCM 90 vs. TC Electronics M-3000
4- Crainsong STC-8 vs. Manley Pul Tec
5- Studer vs. Otari 2" machines (with or with out noise reduction, and which noise reduction, A? SR?
6- Sadie vs. Sonic Solutions
7- Lucent vs. Apogee
8- Neumann U 87 vs. AKG 414
9- DW vs. Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute
10- Fender Custom Shop vs. Paul Reed Smith
11- Alembic vs. Tobias
12- Hafler vs. Crown
13- Meyer vs. Genelec
14- Canare vs. Mogami
15- Doublemint vs. Juicy Fruit

Any of you guys have all this stuff? Can any of you tell me what would be better to buy? Of should I just not consider all this overpriced crap and buy a Roland VS and a Radio Shack mic?

Help!!!

:D

Ed

2" tape? Got a Ferrarri you don't need layin' around, too?

everytime i see the letters s-s-l written out SSL i cream in my pants.

Doublemint is soooo better than Juicy Fruit, it ain't funny.....however, they're both better than the newer high tech stuff, like Bubblicious, which really blows....gibs

Never heard of DW vs yamaha anything but.. like the rest of the list :)

Drum Workshop (DW). Both them and the Yamaha Maple Custom Absolutes have to be some of the finest drums made today.

Yeah, I cream too to see SSL kristian... :)

Yeah Fish, I am sick! :D

I like Juicy Fruit damnit!

No Farrari sitting around. But I tell ya, when I get the cash together, a Otari or Studer (probably the Otari because they are less money) with Dolby SR is going to grace Echo Star.... :)

Hmmmmmmm...I grew kind of fond of the API pre's during a session I did a while back. I really dug their grittiness and sharp transient responce. Long ago when I had the benefit of tracking with a NEVE, I really dug it too, but it was more smooth sounding then the API, so I think they are both excellent choices, just for different things.

Now, I should add one here.

1- Millenium Media vs. Avalon

I really prefer Lexicon verb over the TC stuff. Again, it is the grittiness of it that makes it so nice. The 3000 really is a smooth verb, but the Lexicon stuff just has THAT sound.

Add another...

2- PCM 70 vs. SVR 3000

Have never had the thrill of using a U-47. But, once long ago I did a whole CD using a U-89, which is about as rare of a mic as you can find. The sound was very brilliant. I actually prefered it to the U-87. But, I am no real fan of the U-87. During the Heavy Brothers tracking, we preferred the AT 4050 to the U-87, and I have talked to a lot of engineers who agree on this point. Not to bang the U-87, because it is really a nice sounding mic.

Another....

3- RE 27 n/d vs. D-112 (there is really no comparison though is there..especially if you have actually used a RE 27.... :) )

I have heard stuff that went through Lucent converters, but it would be tough to tell whether their great sound was a result of great production, of superior chipsets. Tough to say really. But I would not turn my nose up to a Apogee Rosetta... :)

4- Weiss digital compressor vs. Waves L2 Ultramaximizer

Oh, almost forgot to add this important one. I am really interested in this comparison....

5- Uptown vs. Flying Fader automation. I have used Uptown and it was excellent. The recall was just about dead on the money to my ears. But, Flying Faders seems to be supplied on many NEVE consoles, so I am assuming that they are in the same ball park eh?

Ed

2- NEVE vs. API mic pre's
Neve, definetely NEVE!!! (As the saliva drips off my mouth)

3- Lexicon PCM 90 vs. TC Electronics M-3000
I like 'em both. I like the Lexi piece for it's unnatural but rich verbs. The Lexicon plate... What a world. The TC piece is very clean.

7- Lucent vs. Apogee
Apogee. Never heard Lucent converters.

8- Neumann U 87 vs. AKG 414
For Background work. Both. Uhh. Double that! I like the AKG sound off the cuff, but the U87 is silky smooth to me. Either way, you couldn't go wrong. But the AKG definetely wins in the price department.

For Lead Vocal work... Neither. I'll take a U47 with a Neve pre anyday.

15- Doublemint vs. Juicy Fruit
Gee Whiz Ed. EVERYone KNows that Extra is the only game in town.

How do you guys support your recording habit?
It reminds me of that farmer joke, when asked what he was going to do after winning a 30 million dollar lottery he replied "farm till its gone" :D

1- Millenium Media vs. Avalon
Ed,

You're really uppin' the stakes now. It seems that the smoothness vs. grittiness thing is where our tastes differ. Most of my choices lean towards "smoother", thus Neve, etc. You're right, Lexicon just has THAT sound. Even on some of the lower end boxes, THAT sound is there. I did a mix at a friends studio where he had a TC M2000, Ensoniq DP4, and a few low-end Lexicon boxes (LXP 15 and another older one). I started on the LXP15 and never left, even though the TC box was right there. I guess if you got something good, there's no need to fool with it.

2- PCM 70 vs. SVR 3000
Don't know.

U47
"Have never had the thrill of using a U-47."
Once you get to use one, you'll never be the same. I rented one recently on a session. I still salivate everytime I think about that mic.

U89
Never used or heard a U-89, but your observation is in line with what I've read about this mic. It's supposed to have a little more "grit" that the U87 sound (Less oriented to the "silky" vocal sound).

"3- RE 27 n/d vs. D-112 (there is really no comparison though is there..especially if you have actually used a RE 27....)"

I haven't used a RE27. Maybe a more fair comparison would be a RE27 or RE20 vs. Sennheiser MD421 or 441

"4- Weiss digital compressor vs. Waves L2 Ultramaximizer"
Haven't heard either. Sorry.

"5- Uptown vs. Flying Fader automation. I have used Uptown and it was excellent."

You're definetely out of my league here. The automation I use is Emagic Logic Audio. :D

You guys all take this recording crap way too serious. Personally, give me a Radio Shack boom box with thos pinhole condensor mics built in, put in a no name cassette like the ones used with the film strips which we watched a million years ago before video, a Sears guitar and drumset and I bet I could record a record akin to Boston's debut release. :D

Yeah--I'm full of shit, so what. If you all can sit around and make us poor slobs cry with envy then I have a right to make you all wail in disgust. ;)

Peace all, Jim

LOL....I like it Jim.....I have always wanted to go back to using some bookshelf speakers, a 4 track cassette, and a cheapy Radio Shack mic and see what happens.

I think maybe some are taking this thread a little too seriously.

I only posted it to sort of illustrate how silly these these comparisons are. I see a million threads asking "How is the so and so compared to the this and that". Like some of us HAVE all this stuff.

Well, I decided to post using some REAL recording gear that is used for the recordings we all love to hear. It is all just in fun. I have used a lot of the gear that is listed, but, do not own almost any of it for my studio. Oh well......

So Jim, what do you think of this?

Urei LA4 vs. JBL 1176 comp/limiters

or

Sans Amp vs. Countryman DI's

Ed

Well Ed. to prove how small budget I am I didn't even KNOW JBL made compressors--just speakers (Maybe I need to go back to the newbie forum). But hey, about ten years ago all I wanted was a Sans Amp. Eveybody tried to get me to buy a Zoom, which of course can now be had for next to nothing in some cases and have a bit of low esteem reputation. But the Sans Amp is still about $200 or more. I remember it being a pretty cool box, but man, tiny switches. I never tried a Countryman. Is it any good? Finally broke down a couple of months ago and bought a Pod--nice big knobs and shaped like an ass being mooned against a window (who could ask for more). But I had to try a lot of boxes along the way, mainly because of the "buy cheap, buy twice" syndrome--us po' folk suffer that a lot. Biggest disappointment for the guitar DI-preamp battle was a Scholz Guitar Ace. Album liner notes on Boston's "Third Stage" album says Tom Scholz used it quite a bit instead of Marshall stacks. Hell I used it a week and I never sounded like Tom Scholz. Of course, my disappointment could have been in my own guitar playing and recording techniques verses Tom Scholz. LOL Now there is a true comparison thread.

Compare:

you vs. George Martin
you vs. Tom Scholz
you vs. Alan Parsons
you vs. Geoff Emeric
you vs. etc.

Sigh, I just humbled myself. :D

Anyone care to continue that thread even though I just basically necessitated that it go into another forum?

Peace, Jim

Well Jim, live and learn. I have been learning for a long time now.... :)

Yeah, JBL also makes power amps. Hell, they will probably make a large diaphram consensor mic here soon since every manufacture is making one. I didn't care for the 1176 though. Piece o' shit. Of course, I am not fan of the LA4 either, even though they are revered comp's.

I cannot compare to any of the people you listed. Those dudes are way out of my league. I aspire to some of their production, but, all in all, I am marching to my own beat when it comes to production. I HAVE to march to my own beat because I don't have 5 million bucks worth of class A shit to record and mix with......*sigh*.....

What about this...

Telefunken vs. Manley mic pre's.

The best sounding mic/preamp combo I ever heard was a matched pair of some old Sony tube mics through a straight gain Telefunken mic pre. We mic'ed some conga's with them and it was like being in the room!!! I have yet to hear anything since that sounded so realistic through speakers.
