Most of what I've read says the monitors should be sitting upright for proper this-n-that.... dont ask me to repeat facts cause I cant, just mentioning it.....
Where is your Phoenix and Distressor?

True enough.... it has to do with the time-alignment of the soundwaves between the LF and HF drivers.tubedude said:

I've never heard of that vertical-monitor-positioning before. I've seen a lot of professional studios (including the one I intern at, and many on John Sayers site) that have the monitors lying on their side.

Sure, most manufacturers will recommend a certain placement for their monitors, but I've NEVER heard of ANYONE recommending that the tweeters should be placed on the inside when mounting horizontally.
When mounting horizontally, the tweeters should be on the extreme outside of the stereo field i.e. the HF driver should be on the left side of the left monitor - the right monitor should have the tweeter to the right of the monitor.
Are you sure you have misread/misquoted your manual? The Alesis monitor one manual is here if you're interested and I quote:
"Monitor Ones are supplied as a simmetrical left - right pair, and if used this way, should be installed with the soft dome high frequency drivers towards the outside of the triangle. The HF driver should be on the left side of the left monitor and on the right side of the right monitor"

The link you posted is indeed to the manual for the Monitor 1 - but it is not the manual for the M1 Active...... here is that link:

And the configuration is exactly as this young person explanined it.
Alesis goes out of their way to explain in the manual the "why's" of this change to conventional thought - acknowledging that it is not the way of the old world - but is the way of their new monitor.
Theior concern is the potential for comb filtering problems - and it seems fairly straightforward.
I have no doubt that they tested this prior to "bucking the system" - at least with this pair of speakers anyway.

On page 418 of Philip Newell's Recording Studio Design, there is a diagram and explanation as to why nearfields should NOT be placed on their side - yet even in that book, there are several pictures of studios with the ever-present NS-10's shown resting on their sides.
Unfortunately, this has been taken to be a statement that it's OK to do this, when it's actually "just a picture" - we've probably all ALSO seen pix of studios in Mix, etc, showing a few vintage guitars sitting on stands in the control room - is anybody here naive enough to think you would MIX in a room with resonant objects like that sitting around?

"There is no physical acoustical difference between individual left and right monitors when they are used in a stereo pair. And the cabinets can sit vertically or horizontally without concern for performance as long as both are properly positioned. For horizontal mounting, tip the cabinets outward so that the high frequency drivers are away from each other. ..."

I didn't think this would turn into a Speaker Placement Thread.
This picture was just taken by a proud (me) once I had put together my new desk and installed all my equipment. I'm surprised that no one noticed that the speakers aren't even wired to the Amp yet!!
Lighten up guys, I will definately be experimenting with speaker placement once everything is wired.

Looks functional to me. You DO need a Lava Lamp. Get with the program.
You need to keep these photos handy to look back on in a few years so you can see what the room looked like before you spent your retirement money on gear.

Yes, it's a GSP 2101 Artist Pro. When I bought it I didn't even know that it may be kind of "Special". As far as I can determine it has the same functionality of all other 2101's except for a few more "Artist" presets. I believe the chrome front panel was part of this package and was a exclusive item sold only through the Guitar Center.
And I do have to agree with you, it is a great piece of equipment and I use it all the time.
