'72-ish Epi Texan (Japanese)

Factory second because of a chip in the neck. I got it used in a swap around '75 or so. Scuffed up a little since then. Bolt-on neck.

I've never played another acoustic that I liked any better than this. I really like the way it plays and the way it sounds.

'65 Vibro Champ

All original AFIK, except for a tube ot two. Before the ran out of parts and switched over to the 'CBS' crap.

Bought it in about '71-'74 somewhere in there. Got a package deal with an Epi solidbody that was the most uncool guitar I could imagine at the time, so I immediately traded it off for next to nothing. I think it was a Coronet, or something very similar. OK, just shoot me.

Mustang bass, year unknown

I know, I need to research these again. I'm not a collector, and have no intention of selling, so it's been a long time since I cared about dating this stuff. I like what I like, don't like what I don't, and I don't care a whole lot about what anyone else thinks.

Anyway, I was on my way to buy a used EB-3 that I had a dealer pick up for me when he made a buying trip to St. Louis, when I stopped off at another store with a friend to look at something else. I looked up and saw this guy, played it, and bought it within about 15 minutes. I love it. Not ot mention the fact that it was about $200 cheaper than the Gibson. Boy, was the other dealer pissed.

Of course now I wish I had the EB-3, too, but I was 16 at the time and could only afford one or the other. 1973, I believe.

And the bass had already been stripped and varnished that way, runs in the varnish and everything. That was one of the reasons I loved it. I've always been a sucker for a raw hunk of wood. I did nothing to it.

early 60's? MusicMaster II

OK, I'll do it one at a time.

I researched this at one time, but now I can't remember what I found to make me believe what I did about this.

It's a MusicMaster II neck, but the body is the same as a Mustang which I think came from the factory that way (Fender used to often use leftover parts when they changed models), and there's somehow something related to a Bronco in there, but now I don't remember what. Someday I'll run across my stash of research and I'll let you know.

Anyway, I saw this and immediately knew I had to have it because it obviously belonged with the Mustang bass. I'm from a small town in Indianan, and I'm pretty sure that whoever did the Mustang also did this one. Same sloppy stripping, same sloppy varnish job, even the same varnish.

Once again, I am not responsible for any of it. What you see is exactly what I saw in '75(?) hanging on the store wall. It had been retrofitted with a DiMarzio Super Distortion hb with a coil tap. Why they put it in the neck position is beyond me. Like I said, it wasn't me. The part I've always really hated about it (other than the fact that I think they dug out the space for the hb with a wood chisel ), was those stupid-ass road signs they put on the pickguard. I alys intended to get a new pickguard for it. One of these days...

Anyway, you should hear that DimArzio through the Vibro Champ.

1950's Vega

It was originally a gold-top, but since I hated gold-tops (I equated them with country) I thought it would be a great idea to strip it and paint it white. Needless to say, I botched the job, hacked up the top, ruining it's future collectibility. After I botched it, I had a guy paint it, who tried to talk me into painting it metalflake. I said no, I wanted white. This was arranged through a local shop, and when I finally got my guitar back after six months (telling the dealer if he didn't get it back from that guy to tell him I was coming after him with my .45, and he knows I would have) it was white, but a really, really shitty job AND the cavities were filled with metalflake. He had used it to practice on. He never got his money and never tried to contact me for it. I never saw him again.

Anyway, the dealer that originally sold it to me, who tried to talk me out of modifying it because it would become collectible, said it was probably about a '54. I've never been able to find any info to really date it, not that it matters a whole lot now. At the time, I was 16 or so, I wanted an LP and that was as close as I could get. I was going to paint it, put humbuckers on it, and replace the trapeze with a tunomatic. You see how far I got.

I just sat the pickup covers on top to give milnoque (who was kindly looking into dating it, he knows Vegas) an idea of what they looked like.

P-90 type single coil.

Really, really nice jazz tone. But, I wanted rock, so....

I've got a couple of interesting keyboards, but I suppose they should go in the keyboard forum, huh?

Your's looks like one of those fancy guitars that real pro guitarists play. Jazz guys & session players, or guys that play in swanky NY supper clubs.

I'd be afraid to pick yours up, like I'd scratch it or something.

Mine looks like something you find laying on the floor of the closet in a trailer somewhere, under a pile of clothes that are there because they've only been worn once.

And that's just the way I like it.

I keep hoping I'll find a good deal on a beat-up LP that's been through the mill, but still plays good. Not one of those relic'ed things, either.

SG clone

I think it's a Maxtone? - I forget now.

I bought it from someone here. (GoodbyeBlueSky) This is his picture of it, btw.

I just always wanted a white SG. Of course, now you can get an Epi white SG..

Anyway, he said he thought it was 80s Japanese. I have no idea.

Very polyester finish, but it's extremely well made.

Cephus, this would be the ultimate disco slut.

It was supposed to be my Mahavishnu guitar. I haven't gotten the inspiration yet.

strat clone

An SX (from Rondo, though I bought it from a guy on another board) again, this is the seller's pic, which I'll follow with another.

I thought I was going to love this based on the pic, because with me, it's all about the grain. I don't. It's actually darker than I thought. Ash, so it's a heavy sucker. I knew I don't like offset dots, but it doesn't play very well. Nothing a good setup wouldn't cure, but I don't know if I want to put the effort and the $ in it, because I wanted to swap the neck out anyway, but now I don't know if I even like the body enough.
