Let It Reign -

This is a rap song I wrote and performed/recorded. I wrote the vocals too. Performing the singing is a girl named Lori Ann. I did the arrangements too but I didn't compose the instrumental. The instrumental was composed by Neomatrix.

This is a psuedo-hip hop beat I composed. It's an expression of still conflict prior to engaging warfare. The meditation before combat. It speaks to my heart with both passion and grief.

I also have more crappy rap music on my myspace page and across the web. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links to my music pages so I will leave it at that for now.

Mix sounds very good to me (only listened to the first one) - all the vocals are very clear & easy to understand - they sound nice & "expensive". I'm certainly no expert on this genre, but the only thing I would suggest is to perhaps emphasise the peak of the tune (before the breakdown) by building up the soundscape with effects etc. that intensify the feeling being expressed by the vocalist - that way the breakdown will hit harder & provide more of a dramatic contour to the tune.

I totally agree with you. That's exactly what I felt but I didn't have much power to adjust the music. I was lucky to get that thunder and lightening in there. The composer is very 'take it or leave it' about his compositions. Personally, that's something I'm still learning too. So much easier said than done without creating chaos or an imbalance in song's overall intensity. I imagine there must be a formula but since I don't know it, it's trial and error.

I listened to Reign. Sounds good. I found it boring after about 2 minutes, so maybe a change up or something to keep a listener's attention. Mostly the instrumantal became too repetitve. Sorry :o

It was a good mix, though. Clearly understood the singer, all elements in their own space. Nice. Did you do the mix??

The MP3 clinic is more for people to post their mixes and let others critique, offer up suggestions/advice rather than just showcasing tunes. So, you can post one song looking for advice on any facet needed, mix, performance, arrangement, etc.

Glad to have you here.

peace,

yeah mixing was nice on the first one, but i got bored by about half way through. The second one needs some thickness, maybe a bass or something

If you told me this was on a CD that sold a bunch of copies I'd believe it, but in relation to say a top 40 or title track I'll say this:

Content: existing is good but needs more.
Arrangement: too long, best parts should come in much sooner.
Mix: average for pro, vocals too low (excellent mix for a HomeRecording)

Still overall, its a good peice of work as is.

Just my observations.

"This is a rap song I wrote and performed/recorded. I wrote the vocals too. Performing the singing is a girl named Lori Ann. I did the arrangements too but I didn't compose the instrumental. The instrumental was composed by Neomatrix."
Does this mean you wrote the lyrics & melody & had someone do the vocal?
What, musically, did you create &/or do for this piece? The statement suggests that you did it all & then nothing at all.
I'm confused?
The mix seems OK - a bit oppressive - the same effect as out of phase speakers - pressured - with the let it rain bvox.

Let It Reign
I wrote the lyrics.
I didn't write the musical piece (instrumental)
I rapped the rapping parts.
I didn't sing the singing parts (although I did the reference)
The singer is lori ann
It was mixed first by someone else
It was mixed again by myself and someone else (using protools LE)

The second one is an instrumental I composed
It's pseudo-HIPHOP so it's not much as far as a changeups
