The RNP and the Echo will make an excellent combo for you starting out.

hopefully, by this you mean its a simple setup, no that it'll sound amateurish?

I think all of the above information is very useful. Echo makes reliable computer interfaces with good quality converters for the price. With that in mind I don't really think you could go wrong. The Echo Gina3 has built in preamps and phantom power and you could get started without the standalone RNP. Your needs and wants will change as you become more aware of the realities of audio recording. You did not mention the need for firewire. The Gina3 is a PCI interface. If you have a "fixed" location computer I would use the PCI over a Firewire device.

Good luck!

well my desktop doesnt have a firewire port although I could buy a card I dont need the preamps on the Gina3G and I was looking for good quality preamps so I'm gonna go with the RNP

thanks

Yes - simple, not amateurish. Of course you'll need to get familiar with the gear first but once you do you should be getting some very good sounds.

You may eventually want to upgrade of course, but this is a combo that will work for you for quite a while, I'm sure.

The Gina is not a bad choice either though, or the new Layla 3G. You get the interface and also a couple of Echo's preamps. Probably not quite the quality of the RNP, but not bad. Plus they'll sound different. I personally think it's important to have as many different "flavors" of preamps as possible. You never know when a certain sound will be right for a particular instrument.

So certainly keep those in mind as interfaces along with the Audiofire, but I'd still get the RNP either way.

i would consider the Focusrite Trakmaster Pro Preamp/Compressor has the phantom power and a host of other goodies.....
all for £160 simply mic up you amp with your sm57 put it though the focusrite
into your sound card and away you go purfect recordings

as for a sound card you could try the M-Audio Audiophile 2496
£55

you can check these out at www.turnkey.co.uk

grrrr... unfortunately im a typical impulse buyer and from hearing what people have said about the RNP and the Echo sound card I went ahead and bought them they should arrive sometime next week:) hopefully they will sound great together and better than the Focusrite which is a hundred odd cheaper, anyway thanks for taking the time to post, do you use them yourself?

yes but i use an m-audio 1010 instead of the 2496 you will have to let me know the results you get with the rnp.

^ will do, i also might post some sound clips when it gets here *excited* :D

kinda pointless post but I thought I would give you an update - the site I ordered the preamp from just rang and said it is out of stock and wont be back until JANUARY! So i'll have to cancel the order and buy it somewhere else, anyone got any good recomendations? Btw Im in the UK

After all the problems I have had I've started to reconsider what I could be buying, I think I am certain about the RNP although they seem to be hard to get hold of. However, I am reconsidering my soundcard.

After reading through forums someone posted a quote from a SoundOnSound review where it said the Echo Mia Midi sounded 'harsh' compared to M-Audio's Audiophile 192, do you think this has any substance to it? Will I be able to hear the difference between the two cards.

Im starting to stress myself out here. One minute everything is fine and on its way the next I feel like I may have regretted my decision to buy the Echo card so its a good thing I had to cancel the order.

Also, does anyone know of the difference between the Echo Mia Midi standard card and the 'V2' - if there is a difference, the reason I ask is that the V2 is priced around £80 and the standard card that has no mention of a 'V2' is about £120.

Any help? :(

ok then.. finally after some research it appears that I won't be able to get the RNP anywhere until January due to some safety requlations that mean it cant yet be sold without complying with them somehow.

So it looks like i will go with the DMP3 and the Echo Mia MIDI as i have heard rave reviews about both and should get me good quality as this price range.

thanks for all ya help!:)

For the money, both the DMP3 and Echo MIA will allow you to get very good results. Enjoy!

^ cheers, just listening to your music its all very good stuff :), was it recordied with that setup and an AT4040?

Yes, "Morning Comes" and "Acoustic Jam" used the DMP3, Echo MIA and an AT4040. The others used a Beringher board (yeah, I know) and some MXL mics. A somewhat recent addition was an M-Audio Tampa...that's really nice too, but it's only a single channel.
