Software To Play Samples Using GamePad

Hey,

I apologise if this is the wrong forum for this question but i'm wondering if anyone knows of any software that would allow me to play samples when the buttons on a gamepad are pressed.

I have a game for my Playstation 2 called DrumMania. It comes with a drum controller which consists of drum pads and a foot pad. I was hoping that I could turn this into a sort of electronic kit. If I got a convertor to allow it to be connected to my computer all I would need is the software to allow me to play samples when the controller pads are hit....does this software exist?

It seems like a better alterative for me than to have a loud drumkit in the house.

Any help is much appreciated,
Ian.

You could try searching the net for DrumMania to MIDI converter.
Can't say I've ever heard of any thing on those lines, but I'm sure theres some electrowizbang out there that could prolly make it happen.

Now if this is something that already outputs a MIDI signal, then there are multitudes of sequencers and samplers out there that will work.

Thanks for the reply! I'll continue searching around for something that may work. I remember coming across a program which allowed you to convert game controllers to MIDI so maybe that will work. It's just it would be nice to know if it does or not before I buy the PS2 to USB converter.

Also, it doesn't really neccessarily need to be MIDI. My first reason for wanting this was just to have the sound played live but to be able to record them using MIDI would definately be a bonus!

If I come across anything i'll post it here.

Do you think there is a chance the drum controller is MIDI? That way I could use HomeStudio along with Battery to play the samples!

Just to update:

I bought a PS2 to PC adapter today. Using a program called LiveSticks I've managed to turn the controller into a MIDI device....I think. When I play the pads on the drum controller drum noises sound using teh standard GM MIDI Drums. However, this is in no way connected to any Multi Tracking software.

Does anyone know of a way I can use this device with HomeStudio as it does not seem to recognise that the pads are being hit? Idealy I'd like to be able to use Battery within HomeStudio so that I can choose the samples that play for each pad.

Thanks,
Ian.

You may have to play around with the MIDI channels in Home Studio (which I don't have ... so I can't really help). Typically MIDI channel 9 is drums. If that helps any.

I tried all the midi channels to see if any of them would pick up but none of them did. The program, LiveSticks, plays the midi drum sounds but their not the best sounding and that's why I would have liked to have been able to go through Battery.

I did have a go at creating my own program to play the WAV drum samples when the pads were hit. It does work but it's not always perfect.

It was just an idea I had that would save me buying an electronic drum kit etc. but I appreciate your help!

Ian.

You could check out this thread and the other links that are posted, for a way to make some e-drums for cheap. If you're handy with some basic electronics.

If I knew enough I'd almost have a go at writing a program.... But I don't..... Is there any way in LiveSticks you can set what midi device/channel it sends the data to? Is there a way you could send the output of LiveSticks to your computer's midi out, and route that straight back to your midi in? Then in Home Studio you should be able to get some sound.

<< DISCLAIMER - I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS WILL WORK. JUST THINKING OF POSSIBILITIES>>

Thanks for the link crankz1. I don't think i'd have the confidence to try and build something like that and that serious I don't think. I just had the drum controller and thought it might be a good way to put it to some use rather than in its box in the attic.

MichaelM, I think you're right and I did try changing the output in LiveSticks but HomeStudio never picked up on any of the MIDI channels (and I tried them all :) )

Thanks,
Ian.
