Software samplers

I haven't gotten into making music in over 20 years. I don't know much about current technology.
Do software samplers usually have sequencers associated with them? I am using Hydrogen as my drum machine, but that would be entirely inadequate to make music with sustaining instruments. I do not need a synthesizer so much as a sampler/sequencer because I have my own sounds I wish to use. Would something like that be available for free, or do I need to purchase something? I could use some recommendations.

Thank you very much. :)

In earlier times I had a Roland sequencer, an MT100, which I coupled with a Roland KR33 keyboard. The sequencer contained a library of sounds and had a recording facility. I would record a drum layer, then add bass, then other instruments all sourced from the MT100, ending up with an arrangement for a complete song.

With computer-based sequencing, the process is not dissimilar. However it's more a case of sequencers having samplers, rather than samplers having sequencers.

So if you want to explore computer-based sequencing and sampling, it is probably best to look for the sequencer first. And which you choose depends on your preferred method of creating music. For example, if you build up tracks using loops, then FruityLoops might be ok. On the other hand, you might prefer the equivalent of a multi-track tape recorder. In that case, programs such as Cubase, ProTools, Logic or Reaper might be better.

Within these programs, there are components that provide for loading and using samples. For example, with Reaper there is ReaSamplOmatic5000 into which you can load your sounds then use as an instrument.

I'm not sure about what you refer to as "your own sounds." If you're referring to loops or WAV files, Reaper does a good job with both right in track mode without even opening up its included sampler. Or, maybe you were looking for a list like this:
