software for compression. help

I know very little about compression. I'm using cool edit pro 2.0 for all my compression needs,but im lost on how to use it.I dont have a clue what things like "level detector","gain processor" are.I also dont know about using milliseconds(like for attack time).

Does anyone have any info they would like to share or some helpful links to explain some of this stuff.

by the way is cep 2.0 compression any good or is it crap.
is there any other compression software that is easier to use or better.

I have tried Ultrafunks compressor and found its visual interface very easy to understand for a compression newbie. You can see visually on a plot/graph what the compressor is doing, and what is happening when you adjust the threshold and ratio. You still need to read some articles on compression theory like on Slackmaster's site.

I dont like using software for compression. If you compress and limit gain before it hits the Computer it will sound bettah. ALesis has a rack compresser for about $100.00 new. Check it out. I use it for Drums, guitar, and vocals. You want to limit all that noise before it gets recorded not after. No noise goes in, you dont have to fuck with it.
 
Yup. I THINK thats what it is. I just bought it cause it was cheap. It does a real nice job.
 
Okay, I've never used one myself but on this board it is mostly known as a damn good paper weight.
 
what is the differnece between the demo version of ultrafunk and full version.
