I bought sonar 2 online online and it has already been registered.

Will Cakewalk let you re-register the software online? Or should I just use the original owner's info?

bought it on ebay from a previous user, or bought it allegedly brand new?

in the first case - you just learned a valuable lesson in software licensing and intellectual property rights.

in the 2nd case - you got screwed and the company that screwed you should be sued.

What's more, if you attempt to re-register it, Cakewalk has explained that they will cancel your license and the person's current product license as he has broken the license agreement.

Bummer.

Q.

I bought it 2nd hand on ebay. Now were I to buy the upgrade version, I could register the upgrade without any problems and be in the clear...right?

hmm i don't know man. how would you buy the upgrade without having the original licence in your name? It does seem fair that if one person gives up their right to a licence then they sould be able to transfer it to somebody else. I wonder if the person that sold you your software already used that software to get the upgrade. In that case you wouldn't be able to get the upgrade from the same piece of software.

You might have some problems there for a couple of reasons... if the person who sold it to you has already bought an upgrade you won't be able to get an upgrade yourself (because the actual upgrade is based on Serial Number, not the fact that you own the media with a CD). So you wil have problems when you are trying to purchase the upgrade.... you can try, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

The license agreement on MOST software does not allow you to re-sell it; you'd have to read the agreement to verify that. You are basically RENTING the use of software from the manufacturer.

Just wait till Microsoft has the ability to come into your PC and melt it down when they detect a shady serial... don't laugh, they've already announced plans....

** Also, the FBI has concluded that 80% of the fraud on the Internet comes from eBay. Have a good one.... **

The main reason I bought the software was to upgrade the quality of the effects.

I am running Windows ME, PA9, with an Echo Gina20 soundcard. Works fine for me but the effects needed a little improvement. For less than $100 got that with Sonar 2.2XL and I didn't have to upgrade my operating system.

If I upgraded to Sonar 3 or 4 it would have started a chain of upgrades that would have led to my death and dismemberment by my accountant (aka the wife).

Upgrade to XP ~ $100
Upgrade to Sonar 4 Producer (gotta have the effects) ~ $300
Upgrade soundcard ~ $200-$300
Total cost = death and dismemberment

I choose life! :D

... and you're not finished with Sonar and a decent soundcard. You need a mixer, monitors, MIDI controllers, outboard effects, etc, etc, etc.

Prepare to be broke!

That is what I am talking about! It is a never ending quest for just that "little bit extra", that little nudge over the cliff as Nigel Tufnel would say. An accurate representation in my case. :p

Shame you wasted $100 on Sonar 2... assuming you had registered your older Cakewalk software you should have been able to get Sonar 4 Upgrade (special for registered Cakewalk customers) is only $349 all up..

Granted, the upgrade to XP and the new sound card.. the trick is to buy in moderation.. ie buy one thing this month.. the next in a couple of months.. etc gradually build up over the years.

I'd hate to think the dollar value of computer hardware/software my father and I have racked up over the years... probably $70K + if not more..
