Let me see....so, I am setting up a new DAW....want MIDI capability but notice it is absent (or increases the price) of many interfaces...suddenly had the thought/question....and this is where you all come in.

Does a softsynth react to MIDI direction internally like an outboard synth MIDI connection would?

A softsynth can be triggered by an external MIDI controller, or by software via some type of piano roll editor.

THanks. That makes sense...
Really, my primary concern is the capability of choosing the different sounds for a track. (I like to create a pattern/rhythm, then try outdifferent patches and see how they sound)
Would that be possible....with the softsynth as a sound source rather than an external sound module?

Yep, that's the point!

You might look into Fruity which can now be run in its entirety as a VSTi! It's very cool!

Thank You, Oh slacking one.

To follow up...how would a programm like Fruity Loops interact with, say, Digital Performer. Only in the sense of the capability to bring FL patches into DP MIDI tracks.
