Softdance new guitars & REAL DRUMS

On my main speakers the vocals are way too loud. I couldn't tell you how many db, but it's well over two.

The vocals sound like they are hot, and slightly noisy.

Supercreep,
Terry & I sat down with a pad & pen writing tit for tat - his line for mine to put that together. Funny process but it seems to have worked. You are very kind!
I've reduced the vocal somewhat (the were lots of folk asking for MORE vox - I like 'em rather less), I've reduced the flange on the solo guitar by 50% & the chorus/verb on the sax but the same. Some of the guitars have only a smidge of delay on them at 100% wet in an attempt to address a phase issue that I created.
Tim, I've not yet addressed the specific freq you suggested as I want to have a listen to the latest mix a couple of times to see if the reduced vol & FX reduce the issues described. Blockfish - I love it - I've used it on a few things on this track & find it great for my 'cello elsewhere. I'll play around with it & the drums but I'm reluctant to bung something like that on a collab's offering.
Gerry, I blush on Terry's behalf & thank you for your generous comment.
Rami, after all the grief this song has given you I'm astounded you can visit the thread - your playing is tres bonn x 11. SORRRRRY!
Greg, softshoes dancing 'cross sand on the floor, I tips my hat when they asks me for more, smile for their pennies and bend a knee to a dime, swift retreat from the rossers 'cos my livin's a crime. In other words I'll take the compliments when I can get 'em!!!! As to the meaning - well a healthy dose of doors will always shift the perception jam mate.
Casey - put the hat on - it's way too sunny in your disposition!
I'm still waiting on the lightning mp3 email with the link to the mix with these changes - I'll edit it in when it arrives.

Sounds better. Drums seem to have more definition and whatever you did seems to have cleaned up the hi-hat warble some. And you're gonna hate me for this, but now the vox are too low. :p Put them halfway between where you have them here, and where you had them in your last mix, and they'll be fine. :D

Wow I almost missed out on this one.

First of Ray you and you Buddy crack out some mean artsy tunes.

I simply love your lyrics and the mood in your music, very fitting.

I was reading the Posted lyrics and at times I spotted Some James Douglas Morrison in there:cool:
I`m a huge fan of the doors.

The sax sounds brilliant vox are also ver fitting to this tune.

Solid work this.

And Rami you did a kick ass jobb as a session drummer again, someone give this guy an award:D

YESSSSSS
Today's remix brought to you by a telephone company that occasionally works.
The link is to a 320 mp3 of a remix based on:
Greg's vox vol reference - ta Greg - it's in the hey diddle diddle now I hope.
Tim's hot vox & sib reference (heaps of trouble - Spitfish froze my computer 1/2 doz times, thesss was emphasised by Classic Chorus but switching chorus types wasn't a successful exercise as the others don't sound as good. & EQing - none of the EQ plugs I have are fine tuned enough to address the issue. I ended up using the MDA de esser, some cake EQ & had to, consequently I had to re boost the vox as they'd been a little emasculated.) Thanks for the fine detail - I cut 700 at tad as well.
RAMI - I think the drums are STUNNING!
Nakatira - ta mate - The song's all about Big Jim & is rife with para & mis phrasing of him. Thanks for the + vibes.

The Instruments and drums all sitting nicely. The vocals still seem a db or so low - but mainly in the first half of the song. I am very familiar with the lyrics so I know the words ;) but they are just not "popping out" as I like them. It's oh so close though....the last mix they were definitely too loud. I need some other opinions here though as a) I love up front vocals (maybe too much) and b) I'm no mix master :)
I'm liking the tones on everything - whatever you've mixed this down with (plug-ins?) seems to be working well. It's a nice punchy rocking tune....

Ta Ido,
I guess it's going to take some tweaking to get the vox right again - with the amount of fiddling I did to treat the issues Tim & others pointed out.
The Plug Ins are all freebies:
Vox - Kjaerhus Classic Chorus & Blockfish (set to vintage vocal) and the MDA de-esser.
Bass - Blockfish set to studio bass Cakewalk Stereo EQ'd with a massive peak at 3khz & rolled off the bottom end from 500.
The faux mastering is the Antress VFM.
All free or came with Cake. The only thing I had to pay for was the VST wrapper (so, so SO much better than the free ones).
The rest of the effects are as described elsewhere particularly in an effort to address the phase prob with the mic'd guitars (still don't have my recording comp back - dead since BOXING DAY - so I'm unable to rerecord them.
OH, I smacked some sonic max - the gtr setting - on a couple of the gtr track & that REALLY helped with the phase prob.

some issues here..... lead guitar has some reverb that seperates it from the mix....main vocal dry as a bone......sounds like your doing it in your bedroom without wanting to wake your mum and dad....

There's no 'verb on the solo gtr - only flanging - it's probably my bad playing that sets it apart!
The vocal has chorus - no 'verb but not dry.
I have to nudge it up a little so it may sound less confessional with more errgs.
Thanks for the input - I'll listen again before addressing the vox vol.

Slight remix with MORE vocal & a tweak to the squeak in the bass at soundclick:

Shawn,
Cool mix. The bass drum really kicks the back of my skulls in h'phones.
The juxtaposition of the cleaner guitar dominating one cannel & the dirty one in the other works well. The cleanest guitars were the backbone of the song for years until I decided to experiment with distortion. I always wanted a bit of chime or jangle in it.
The vocals work well - a slight touch of the alien on occasion but it's in keeping with the theme of the song.
I'll have to listen agin before commenting more.
Great work & thanks for bringing a new interpretation to the piece.

Ray,

I'm glad you like it! I really love the song, and I'm geeked I had the chance to work on it. There were some technical challenges. When we stared talking, I had no idea some of these tracks were recorded 20+ years ago, on a cassette tape! Then, with only having a stereo file of Rami's sweet drums, I did a little sample replacement therapy. I don't have software that does this automatically, so I gated the signal heavily, and sent the output to my Alesis DM5 drum module, which has trigger inputs. It spit out midi notes, and then I was able to bring those into Cubase and edit them, and make them trigger the snare and kick drum samples I used to augment the track. That why I was able to push the kick drum, to "kicks the back of my skulls" levels...
If you have any suggested tweaks, please let me know. After you're satisfied, I'd be happy to send a CD back in the mail to you of the mix, if you're interested.

Peace!

~Shawn

Shawn,
Heavy surgery!
It's a great mix - I'll have to send a link to Terry - I don't think he's dropped into the forum in ages.
The vox are ancient on this but most of the rest isn't nearly as old - having been tweaked or replaced over the years.
Of course I'll be keen to get a CD copy. Anytime you feel you're done will be fine with me. this is your mix project so you call the shots. I didn't put any caveat on when I sent you the tracks so the result is to make it what you hear in it.
Cool bananas.
