i'm looking for a soft synth/sampler that will let me play 'realistic' sounding strings/piano/etc.
does anyone have any suggestions?
so far i've heard good things about sampletank2 and kontakt. i've never actually used one before, so it's hard for me to tell what i should get.
my setup is with protools and a digi001.

i posted this in another forum, but i think it will get a better response here.

thanks alot

I use NI Kompakt, which comes with a great sample library and works very well for me, even on my somewhat antiquated PIII/800. It can import many formats, including soundfonts, WAV of course, AKAI, etc. etc.

Some think of Kompakt as some sort of Kontakt-Lite, but I actually like having less tweaking options (less diversion). I bought it for around $130 from ZZounds or B&H Photo.

thanks alot for the reply. do you use it for realistic sounding pianos and stuff, or for other things?

Sorry for the delay in replying, been busy...

Yes, I use it for realistic instrument sounds that I don't play, or for instruments I don't own (I'm a guitarist primarily). Sounds I use regularly in Kompakt include piano, rhodes, strings, vibes, and choirs. I've also built a couple instruments using free samples and soundfonts found on the Net, such as Mellotron, synth strings and a few pianos.

It has pretty decent organ sounds too, but I prefer Native Instruments B4 for that.

Kompakt has control over the basic parameters of a sound, and it has a few effects and filters, so you can alter sounds if that's what you're after. When I want to experiment or mangle sounds though I use a soft synth.

thanks alot for the replys. you've been very helpful.
