What components are you going to use? What motherboard, what power supply, how much memory, which processor, what harddrive, and so on...

So go ahead.. What would you use???

(I'm guessing about $2,500 to put that puppy together..)

This is what I have right now.. I'm using PII 350 mhz with 10g Seagate & 30g Maxtor hard drive and 192k of ram.

I wouldn't mind at all building what you suggest, (and I'm also strongly considering an Apple G-4 system) but before I shell out that kind of dough, I want to get a handle on being able to to a fair job with what I have now.

I'm thinking of Logic Silver for software for starters, (which I can later upgrade to Platimum 4.5..), I have the Darla soundcard, a Blue Max compressor, Alesis Moniter 1 w/RA amplifer..

So how well am I doing so far with what I have assembled now as far as the computer goes? And what upgrades would you do to my existing system if you were to use it for this type of setup?

Yeah $2500 might cover the 19" LCD (which is overkill, but if it were my system and I had the $) :)

Anyway, it all depends on what you need, how many tracks you require to run and/or record at one time. How many plug-in's you expect to be able to run etc.

I'm going from memory, but I believe Logic Silver offers 24 tracks and several plugins..

Truth is, I'm sure I could get by with less than 1/2 that easily but again, I'm a beginner in every sense of the word, so I would really like to keep tracks to a minimum and concentrate on producing good sounding songs, so I get the feeling I would be interested in more plugins, rather than tracks to begin with..

Your current system will handle that easy than, just stick with that until you need to upgrade. 12 tracks with a few plugin's should be no prob on your setup.

Plugin's are important, but they cant work miracles. get the tracks down first and see what can be done with your current setup.
 
The only thing I would suggest is that you upgrade your processor 350Meg might not handle the software...especially if you plan on doing more than 12+ - tracks with plugins. The Multi-track and plugins will work your cpu hard and would probably lock it up or stop, which are a pain when your trying to record...Other than that your system should work fine.Good Luck

ok.. ill throw in.

Digital mixer of my choice, with TDIF outs... possibly the discontinued but supported Tascam TMD-8000.

Enough soundscape MIXTREME cards to import all thos tracks at once...3 or 4 should do.

a modest overclocked celeron on an asus board.

BIG hard drives.

shitloads of RAM

that matrox DUAL HEAD video card. DUAL MONITORS IS A MUST HAVE.

one big monitor, one chaeper one.

a midi interface... midisport 2x2... to interface my mixer w/ comp.

Upper mediocre cd-rw

Cable modem.

Thats it. Its ALMOST what I have now....and if I couldn't do a KICK ASS project on that, I need to turn in my card.
