Studiophiles SP-5B. They are very accurate in the mid and high range. A little bottom lite but you figure them out pretty quick.

Next stop is NS10s.

yep, I too am using the Tannoy Reveals.. great sound, great price

You look at anything and compare it to anything else and your pretty much going to get mixed opinions. I would guess that a lot of the 'not so good opinions' are from people who, have a friend, or know someone, or have bought or tried the cheapest kit or made their own from scratch, it's like saying "yeah I drove a Yugo, wasn't that great, I'm going to stick with American cars"

Well actually the people that advised against it were more of the believe that it toke too much knowledge of nuances to be worth it. not "cost-effective" was a phrase i heard a couple times.
And after reading your message my guess is is that thats correct. Although that doesnt mean that its not worth a try for a student like myself. I am thinking that it might be a good summer holiday project. Is that realistic or will it take me years to learn enough?

Though it doesn't take that much money to actually buy the parts for GREAT Studio Monitors, it's how you put it together, for instance, you can buy the same woofers as the Mackie "824" for $30.00/ea., the same tweeters as the Blue Sky "System One" for $80.00/ea.(though they might have theirs slightly modifyed, maybe not), make some crossovers(this is what can make or break any speaker, infact most consumer speakers can be made to sound so, so much better by improving the crossover) for about $50.00/ea. put them in a solid non-reasonant box, and wala for under $350.00 you've got some monitors that sound like they should've cost at least twice that, (I should point out that I've not built this system, I would use a better woofer) but it can be done, the problem is having the know how.

That sounds very cool, btw im not looking fo $150 dollar monitors. I was gonna save up for a pair of Mackie's (although probably not the 824).

Thanks for the advice, would you mind if i asked you a couple more questions when I have time to get the project underway seriously?

My primaries are KRK V8s... I use Yorkville YSM-1s paired with a Tannoy PSB-110 sub as secondary...

Monitors

If you really want to do this on the cheap while your saving up for "real monitors", get your self an equalizer with a spectrum analyzer and a pink noise generator like the BSR EQ 3000 . You can find these everyday on EBAY for around $60. It will allow you to get a fairly flat response from you're piece o' crap home stereo, boombox, stereo box stickers. I've had good results, the mix that I hear through my system is the mix that I hear through other systems. Good Luck.

wokwok,
Yeah, If you want to give it a try, this summer I'm going to come up with a couple plans for monitors, powered and non, I'll try to bring them into Full Compass for comparisons, or who knows maybe I can get them into Smart Studios and get Butch Vig to try them out LOL. I'll keep you posted.

Wow! Be sure to keep me updated! Maybe we could exchange email addy's?

EQ

Whats the difficulty with my eq Idea? Like I said, my mixes have sounded consistent on everything from nice home systems to car stereos to crappy BOX type home systems and boom boxes. RUn the pink noise through the speakers, mic it to the EQ, flatten the frequncies, run your mix through the eq, whoila! I'm not sayin that the speakers will sound great, and if you move them you have to do it all over again, but you will hear your mix fairly accurately. It's a cheap interumm solution to an expensive problem. $300-$700 IS A LOT OF MONEY TO MOST PEOPLE. I thought this was supposed to be a forum about HOME RECORDING, not financing a proffessional grade studio. Most musicians are not the most well to do folks, and need solutions and answers other than and in addition to BUY THIS BUY THAT BUY THIS BUY THAT.

The problem with EQ is the non-linearity you introduce into your signal chain due to the phase anomalies you get in using EQ to process a signal - especially the budget EQ stuff...

Further, if you adjust EQ using SA readings, that only represents the response AT THAT SPOT... move a couple of inches over and your response is skewed all over again.

And on top of that, EQ units (unless you got spare GML EQs lying about) are too imprecise to really flatten the response.

By introducing another element into the chain, you're actually making the problem worse in most cases than if you had simply learned to translate your mixes in the environment you have in the first place!

Home Recording or not - most people do want to adhere or aspire to proper recording practices. And I don't know where you got the idea I was suggesting one needs to spend more money when I was actually NOT advocating buying anything, rather simply hearing what you're listening to and knowing where it stands in comparison to other systems.
