I'm not sure if this is finished. I'm tempted to put a few more vocal harmonies on some parts.

This is the first tune I ever do completely using the TASCAM US800. I used to track everything on a 2488 and then mix in the computer.

Anyway, let me know how the mix is. As always, I think my vocals are too loud, but I always think that, so I'm not sure.

Thnax,

INDIAN SUMMER

No the vocals are not too loud. They do seem to be a bit far back. Comapring it to the drums and guitars which are more up front. Excellent groove :-)

Thanx Ido.

Really? I still need to bring them up? Damn it!

Vocals sound spot on to me. I wouldn't take them up or down. Like the tune, good melodies, good balance, vocals are great and you haven't overcooked it.

Sounds cool Rami. I think the kick is a little too woofy in the way lows and maybe too out front. Crazy, I know, I had a hard time typing it out, but it sounds kind of out of place. It sounds seperate from everything else. Maybe try whatever you think is best to get it to sit in the mix more without vanishing. Everything else sounds really good, although I'm not too crazy about the hard ending. It's cool to just cut out like that, but I think it's too clean of a cut. There's no cymbal din or reverb tail or anything. It's like a clean digital slice. Sounds a little unnatural. Maybe that's a stylistic choice, but I'd like a little hint of trail off or something. Overall good work though, as always. Vocals sound great to me.

Thanx a lot man.

I don't know what's going on with the bass drum in this tune. I recorded 3 other tunes since this one and my kik is great. I thought it had to be my imagination that the kik sounds really flabby in this tune, but you just confirmed it. It's really weird. The only thing I can think of is, after recording this track, I noticed the kik drum mic stand was touching the rim of my bass drum. It must be causing the wonkiness we're hearing. I'm going to re-track the drums for this, probably later today. It will literally take me 3 minutes to re-do.

As far as the ending, I hear what you're saying, but it is what I wanted. There's no editing there. I played it as we hear it. The only other thing I did was program the reverb to cut out before the end to get the dry ending. I can re-think that and change it in an instant if I decide to.

Thanx for the help, I'll be re-tracking those drums.

Cool trip down psychedelic lane. :)

I think the vocals are fine, they sit out front pretty good.
Agree on the abrupt ending...though I see what you were going for, a fade-in at the start and then a hard ending.
Maybe add one single sound/hit so it's not just a hard CUT like that with no ambiance.
Maybe a gong...a deep tom hit....a record needle scratch...a radio station dialing out....something.....?

Not bad ideas. I'll probably try a couple of those. Digging the record-scratch idea. I guess it will depend what song comes after this on the CD. Thanx Miro.

Yeah the stand touching the rim can definitely do some weird things. One time I had a tom mic set up and the cable was close enough to a crash cymbal so that when I hit that crash it would just barely graze the cable. I noticed it while I was tracking but didn't think much of it because it didn't affect the cymbals sound so I just kept playing. When I sat down at the computer afterwards I noticed a funky waveform on that tom track. I listened to it and there was this horrible harsh static in that tom track every time I hit that cymbal that was touching the cable. I had redo everything. Lesson learned - don't let nuthin touch nuthin else!

Definitely. Other lesson: Check the placement of everything before tracking, even if you think it's impossible that anything moved since the last time you recorded.

I got lazy and paid the price. Never again! :D

Fucking cats! :(

Hi Rami,

I like the song - it's very cool - and it's a good recording. The Kick did sound a little boomy or something - I'm looking forward to hearing your next cat-corrected iteration. I was also thinking for a tune like this with a relatively open beat with lots of space in it, that it would be cool to hear a little more smack on the snare and maybe some plate or some type of verb on the snare with more decay...? It might sound like total cheese too, but that's kind of what my ears were wishing for :)

Very Best,

Thanx dude

I fixed up the kik a little bit. But I'm buying all new skins for my drums this weekend, so I might re-track it anyway. I think it's a little better now.

Hey Rami - really tight sounding and a good mix overall.

For me, if anything, I thought both the kick and the vocals were a little too loud relative to everything else, but probably a subjective thing there. The BGVs / harmonies are totally pro sounding to me. I like the sound on the main guitar part...a mid-heavy, retro sort of tone with a nice growl to it. Cool tone on the solo at the end too.

Thanx a lot Heat. I just put up a new mix with the kik and lead vocals a little bit lower, mainly based on your comment, but also what I was feeling on my last listen. I know most everyone else said the vocals were a good level, and they're probably right. But I just can't enjoy listening to this tune with my vocals as loud as they were. As far as the kik, I fixed it up the best I could, but since I'm changing all my skins this weekend, I'm probably going to re-track this and a few of the last tunes I did. Can't wait.

Thanx for all the help so far.

Wow. The kick sounds very different now. It's still pretty high in the mix, but much less boomy than before. I think I like it better this way.

You didn't lose anything with the vocals at this level imo.

Did you change the guitars at all? They seem to have a little more bite, but maybe it just seems that way in relation to the other changes.

Great. I didn't change anything other than the level of the vocals by -1db and the kik by -2 db. I think I like it better this way, too. But I know me, once I change all my skins and listen to the awesomeness of new skins, I'll probably end up re-tracking the drums to this anyway.

I agree that the vocals are not too loud. I think they could come up just a hair, but they're fine as is. I would put the guitar solos up a little bit too, especially the one at the end. Everything comes through clearly, nice work!

edit: I definitely hear more harmonies; you should go for it!
