So ... then I took on "Rocket Man"

hey Kevin, you put out good stuff and I enjoyed this...my favorite Elton song. As far as the mix I think it sounds a little "too full"...a little too much bottom end on both piano and vocals.

Beautiful.
The piano could use more shine.

That was pretty cool man. I think I hear some weirdness going on with the vocals though. Maybe it's an effect or something.

Oh-oh. Here we go again. :laughings:

Really nice, K. I think as a solo piece (no drums, bass, etc....) it seems a bit long since it doesn't naturally get orchestrated with other instruments coming in. But it's a good performance.

Will attend, bud. Thanks for the listen.

Less lows, more highs. I'll add some. Thanks S!

I'm really thinking of that grand Steinway sound where they get that really tinking sound on the high notes.

See if you can find a CFX emulation (Yamaha 9') Great sound for this piece. Agree with the tinny, mid-high-rangish, vocal thing going on. (Sorry RAMI). Really sounds out in several places. The "be" at 3:08 among others.
Great performance and energy.

Thanks for all the great thoughts, folks. Truly appreciated.

New mix w/ a lot of changes is now on the link above. The metallic sound was the vocal plate I was using. It's gone ... and I worked on adding some other effects ... and eq and shit. :)

Good stuff. I won't critique as others may on the fine points. I'm just listening as a music lover. :listeningmusic:

Took a gander, and had a listen at the soundcloud page....wow! you've been a busy boy! Well done.

I'm starting a new band, so my recording time has been limited to doing essentially an instrument and vocal. I'm having fun doing the covers ... and still have a couple more to do.

Thanks for the kind words!

I think for me, the approach was too angry, for too long. The piano sounded like karate hands. In this song, there is light and shade, builds and pull backs and builds again, but this just starts loud and stays loud. It's got pretty sad lyrics really, he's lonely, not angry. Me personally, I'd have started quiet, and gone up for the choruses, down again for the verses. I didn't like the harmonies, because they were so similar in tone to the main vocal that they fought with each other. I might have tried dropping the song down a tone, recording the harmonies, the sticking them all back up - maybe even a semi tone, and the pitch shifted one might sit better. even better could perhaps have been to replace the BVs with ash, and do three part harmony, just in selected places. However, it's personal preference, and doing an Elton song is never easy.

I think it sounds great....and I agree it could use more stuff in it due to the length...like Rami said.

I hear what Rob is saying and and wouldn't mind hearing it softer to compare. I like it the way it is though.

That's my favorite EJ song and it a good cover.

On a positive note, no one mentioned the vocal tone any more. :)

I actually accidentally played the chorus 3x at the end ... my bad on the length.

I gotta ask: Are you using a new mic for vocals? Lots of people hear that sound on your vocals. It's not your voice, and I don't think it's the space you're recording in. If it's not an effect you're putting on it, it's gotta be the mic or the cable or...?

Really cool, the sound of your voice is emotive and I like it, I would play with EQ on it for a little more tonal balance, seems a little heavy in the middle. Sounds like a flanger on the vocal, is the reverb modulated? You really express the feel in your performance well, with your voice and the piano. Someone mentioned the piano sound, and I probably would try some others there too or add some air, or maybe just an exciter. The space you put this in sounds right on. Great job, wish I could sing like that!

I thought it was the vocal plate I originally used, but it could be also be a phase reflection off the near wall. I took FoulPhil's advice and purchased a CAD isolation device, and we'll see whether or not that clear things up a bit.

Thank you!

Yes, in order to address some of the phase issues folks were hearing, I actually buried it more in modulation. I used Reel ADT which I got on sale for $29.

Waves is prohibitively expensive at full retail, but often they run incredible steal deals.
