and it camed with this sheet from USR, explaining the slitting issue. with diagrams and everything.

Also, the reels came on flanges that has one side totally filled in, no "windows", only they put the tape on backwards! The flange that you cannot see through would be on TOP if you loaded the reel onto the right hub. wtf!?

Weird... Sounds like Santa's elves at the factory screwed up a bit.

this is bad news.
i assume you are talking about 1/4" tape right?

Send them back the tape with this graph. :D

By the way, the chart in my post above is a complete fabrication, but IMO affectively true. Anyway, it’s an exaggeration… a graphical hyperbole. However, I can’t let it sit there long enough for someone to pass it along as fact, only long enough to make the point, which you won’t get anyway if you aren’t following the RMGI shed issues and what they are saying is to blame. ;)

I dunno, maybe there’s so much inaccurate info out there already I could let it stand, as it’s a drop to the bucket either way… one more drop or one less.

And where has DR. ZEE been lately? He could say what I just said and make it sound prettier, I'm sure. :)

not only does the tape shed but on my 8-track any wobble problems get way way worse. Some channels are impossible to bias because the 10khz is jumping around pretty bad. I put the bassier tracks on those channels.

[I finally found a good spring scale (that itself can be calibrated) so I am ready to do figure out how to do a tension alignment......when I get a day off.]

I am in the middle of recording a pretty huge project, and I have been recalibrating the bias and record levels every day for each tape...they can vary quite a bit! but its worth it!

I can't believe thier brand new tape sheds. Are they doing anything to fix it?

Steve,

the tape doesn't shed....well, supposedly if the tape were run on a brand new machine it wouldn't shed. but machines that have been "worn in" with 456 will have some edge shedding because 456 was on the narrow side of width tolerance. In addition, I haven't thoroughly tested this new batch yet. Just an older batch I got when it first came out.

Might be loaded tails out?

Just a thought. It would be a good idea.

MCI, thats just it....it wasn't loaded tails out at all.

OK, I am confused here... Can't you just attach the reels on the left hub with the window flange on top?

Cheers,

Otto

yeah but then its not tails out; I guess what I am saying is that then I would have to transfer to a different reel, or do several transfers to get it back on the same reel...its not a big deal I am just pointing out a small oversight.

Got it. On 1/4" and 1/2", I'm used to buying pancakes, putting flanges on, transferring to a precision reel for recording purposes and then storing the tape on a cheap plastic reel, so it didn't seem like a lot of extra work.

Cheers,

Otto

Yep, just remove the screws and change the side of the pancake each flange is on. I've never bought a blank tape that was already tails-out. That being based on which side the logo was on. Of course you can ignore that if both flanges are the same.

I thought the solid reel was an option on request.

In my experience the windage holes (cutouts) are important for smooth winding at fast speed. Even with the windage holes staggered instead of across from each other I've noticed worse tape packing.

In addition to hub access for threading, the cutouts are for air to escape at fast winding. To some degree it depends on machine, fast wind speed, and tape type as to how noticeable it is.

:)

So is this RGMI tape not good for a Tascam 38-8? Just wondering? Also when ordering new tape does it come tails out? Ive never ordered new...

In what sense do you think it's not good? The vast majority of people really like it and have had no problems. The stuff that I got arrived in a way that I can just mount it on the left side and start recording to the take up reel (on the right).

where did u order from? what kind of flanges was it on?

Falken, Seemed to be describing problems running the tape. Slitting issues and wobble on his machine...Thats why I was asking if it would be bad to use that tape as it currently is on a 38-8?
